This weekend I went over to meet Tom Broome, owner of Cycad Jungle, in Lakeland. He's a great guy and has a huge variety of beautiful cycads. He is a cycad expert and is very happy to share information about growing them. I picked up a bag of his famous cycad fertilizer and a little cycad beauty to take home.

Turns out he grows and sells hot peppers too! These are not your ordinary hot peppers; these are 'Man vs. Food' kinda hot peppers. I got a variety of fresh peppers along with some of his homemade pepper powder. I made a dip with one of his Ghost peppers last night. Awesome!!

I highly recommend giving these peppers a try but be careful...one variety he grows (I think it's called Brain Strain) rates about 2,000,000 on the scoville scale! Check out his Website at seriouslyhotpeppers.com.

Enjoy!

you can have some fun with these. the brain strain is another name for the marugan scorpion from what i understand and is twice as the ghost peppers. im growing both of those at the moment. ive eaten a ghost whole and it was insane. mouth felt like wax for a few days after. i have some hybrid 7pots that are almost ripe. these ones are supposed to be a bit hotter than the ghosts. ill find out in about a week.

No, 7 Pod Brain Strains are NOT the same as the Moruga Scorpion. the taste and the heat is way different, and much better tasting to me.We have "Hot Pepper Night" at a local restaurant every Monday Night (4 hours from now) The whole bar does taste tests comparing different peppers every time. If you check websites, The Butch T Scorpion pepper came in at 1,463,700 SHUs, where the hot pepper institute got one of their Morugas to hit 2,009.- - -. We have found from our taste tests that the Brain Strains taste about 30% hotter than the Morugas (which is still the worlds highest recorded pepper). The 7 pod Douglah is close to the Brains, but the heat drops off quicker. It however, has a very unique smoky/nutty taste and it is a chocolate pepper, so it is dark purple. The two peppers that beat all of these are the Carolina Reaper, and the hottest for sure, and also a much better tatsing pepper, is the 7 Pod Primo. Even though we don't get the peppers tested, if the Morugas are 2 million +, then in comparison, the primos should come in at about 3 million, because they are literally, that much hotter. Time will tell to see what becomes the next record holder, but you can be sure that before it happens, I'll already be growing it. So Savannah1, did you try the Douglah yet?

There you go, you've learned well grasshopper! You'll need one for that Brain Strain too. BTW the powder was the Yellow Brain Strain, not as hot as the red Brain powder.

I used a tiny amount of the Yellow Brain Strain powder in a stew I made and it turned out hot but flavorful!

Yowzer, I grow Ghost, Habanero and Scotch Bonnets. We make our own jerk sauce and use 'em in homemade sketty and enchilada sauces. Like I said before, steaming them for 15-20 minutes and de-seeding/veining them takes away the majority of the fire but leaves the citrusy essences.

Edited to add....Steve, yer a loon for eating a Ghost. You have my utmost sympathies/respect.

Not as bad as I thought it would be but for some reason regular habaneros turn into razor blade in my stomach.

We went crazy at my palm party. Tom brought a nice assortment and I froze what was left, so I am still enjoying them! Yes, I had the most trouble with the Douglah, it just "clamped off" my throat. Maybe it wasn't the hottest pepper Tom brough, but it was the one that affected me most.

I'm still waiting for my Asian variety of Habanero, "Fatali" to start making fruit. Seems to me we're having a weak season for peppers of all kinds up here, while everything else is growing like gangbusters. You'd think with a dozen or so plants I'd have more than the handful of peppers I have so far, an most of those baby bells or jalapenos.

Maybe I should walk down to our local nursery and see if he still has some ghost chili plants for sale...

Go for the burn!

I thought I would throw in a few answers and corrections in no particular order. First, a Fatalii is from Africa and is not a Habanero. It is its own type and the most citrusy of all the yellow chinensis peppers. It is about the same heat as a red habanero though, but the taste is way different. On a hot pepper forum I am on, every once in a while, someone will ask, of all the pepeprs you grow, what tastes the best? (and there are 100s to choose from) One out of four answers is the Fatalii. I've found that Fatallis take a little longer to get going and produce well, almost half a season longer, so don't worry, your plant will come around.

You all are right about the Douglah, eat a third of the fresh pepper or more and it will take your breath away. Douglahs are time release, they get hotter for about 30 seconds until they hit max and then it goes right into your throat and it stays there for about 8 to 10 minutes. Others have said that if you wat a whole fresh one, you have agood chance at loosing it, like the guy at the warehouse did. I'm surprised about the white hab though. I brought 10 of them last night and probably ate 3 of them by myself.

The burn in the mouth is worse than the next day. I had my milkshake last night and I ate about 3 of the white habs, about a quarter each of Bhuts, Douglah, Carolina Reaper, yellow 7 pod, red Savina habanero, and red Brain Strain, and no burn this morning. Stomach cramps are common when people eat entire primos or reapers, but I don't choke down something like these whole. MY tolerance has built up a lot over the last 4 years and doing this every Monday night really has my tolerance up. Anybody from the central Florida area that wants to come to Monday night is welcome, just let me know. Tom

The maraschino peppers alone give me stomach cramps.

On top of that they are painfull as they leave your body.

They are still hot on their way out as they are coming in.....

my warehouse guy doesnt eat hot stuff very much. the white habs i have do pack a punch but theyre not what i would call a "superhot" at all. they just look so weak because mine are only about the size of my thumb nail that anyone will eat them. i can get people to eat my pequins because theyre so small too.

Tom. I tried the Douglah! I mixed small slices in a cheese dip. Super hot but I like it!! It leaves a pretty long lasting burn. It's hard to explain but I find it a little addictive. I just can't imagine taking a bite of the pepper. Those of you who have...bravo!

Now you are just learning about endorphins. The hot pepper makes so much heat that your receptors overload and causes the endorphins to kick in.(there is a lot of info on this out in the internet and certainly explains it way better than I just did) Long after the pain of the heat and burn goes away, that feeling you get after that can last an hour and a half. One of the reasons some of the people you see on utube eat whole peppers is because of the rush and sometimes, euphoria that can last for that long. It definately at least wakes you up. One man that locally owns a Mexican restaurant uses my Bhut Jolokia powder every morning on his eggs. He doesn't drink coffee at all and the pepper powder keeps him up and going for the first couple of hours at work. There is no real reason to eat the pepper plain, you can put what you want in some food and do the same thing. It sounds like you like these way better than I was expecting. I guess the Brain Strain is next. If you keep eating these you will also find that your tolerance will go up and you will be able to eat, at least parts, of even hotter peppers. The bottom line though, is find the pepeprs that taste the best. For me now, the 7 pod Primo is the best for a rich, strong taste as well as probably the hottest pepper I've tried so far. In a little over 2 months, I'll have some of the first " Fatalii Gormet Jigsaw" peppers in the US ready. The taste tests will start again to see if we have a new hottest pepper. Tom

All this talk about Douglah mad me go out and but a plant today. I was lucky to find one with some young pods on it too. My yellow 7 pot has one pod that just turned yellow. Has anyone eaten a yellow 7 pod. I guess it's supposed to have a slight citrus flavor.

The guy that makes the sauce that I gave the link to, uses the yellow 7 pod as the base for his yellow sauce. It does have a slight citrusy taste but when you compare the yellow 7 to the Fatalii, the yellow 7 tastes like a watered down version in that yellow, citrus taste. The yellow 7s are normally hotter though. Fataliis are supposed to be along the lines of a habanero, even though mine seem way hotter. The yellow 7 can go up to a milltion scovilles, which is like the heat of a Bhut Jolokia, only with a yellow taste. Mine are lower than a Bhut, but still pretty hot. The yellow Brain Strains are even hotter than the yellow 7s, which I like a lot. BUT for taste the Fataliis are hard to beat for that kind of taste. I have some yellow scorpion CARDIs and a few other hot yellows that I'm trying out, but so far those are my favorite yellows. Good score on the Douglah. Wait till they get darker purple to pick them. If they have any hint of green still on them, you lose a lot of the unique chocolate taste. They have some new chocolate peppers, but I still think the Douglah stands out from the rest. I had a great time at Bucc's palm party a month or so ago. A group of us tried different peppers and the over all favorite of most of the people trying them was the Douglah. Sounds like your 4 or 5 weeks away. Take small bites to start out with. You won't want to eat a whole one like you did the bhut.

My brain has been strained!!!! Brain Strain is hot! hot! hot!

Yea, and you thought the Douglah was hot! The searing affect lasts a lot longer with the Brain compared to the Douglah. The brain Strain has been out favorite on hot pepper night for getting the hottest we can get. We even use that one for making hot alcoholic drinks, like the Water Moccasin With a Bite. If I hadn't just recently tried the Primo, the red Brain Strain would still be my favorite. People think Bhut Jolokias, or "Ghost Peppers" are super hot, but the brains bring heat to a whole other level. Congratulations on taking the plunge. Yea, that Fatalii will be almost like candy compared to the brain. Thats why I gave you those as a group so you can try the different tastes and experience the different levels of heat. Just think, the Primos bring heat to another level compared to the brain! The brain still has a bit of a time release effect, where it gets hotter for another minute or so, the Primos hit you at once, as soon as it touches whatever part of you it touches first. Its instant and long lasting, but it actually has a GREAT taste that is rich in flavor. The powder is my new favorite to carry around when I go to certain restaurants.
