All right.

I have these ladies.

Palms, that is.

Giving me problems. Of my making, not theirs.

I was dumb enough to plant them right along my front path and in front of my Living Room Window of Doom .

Well it's a living room. Rhymes with doom. And tomb. And womb.

As in, dark as.

So, I need to remove them.

Suggestions you all?

I could just dig them up, but I did that and it died.

Remove, as in dig and pot.

Okay, from the outside.

As you walk up the path to my Front Door of Doom.

That pinnate, pain in the ass palm, is a Dypsis (hail, DYPSIS) baronii. Say amen.

Sorry. This is Rhapis excelsa.

I don't know about moving full-grown stems, but little ones, just coming out of the ground seem to take to pots real well.

I have been avoiding planting anything directly in front of our living room windows to not obstruct the view, but then I look at that space as wasted space since I'm not planting something there... What a dilemma.

Option 1: dig up raphis, leave baronii but prune back canes on baronii to leave enough light. Raphis will survive.

Option 2: bulldoze house and move into small trailer to make room for more palms.

Oh, no.

I'm not leaving that new space open for long.

I'll plant something there. Small enough to not block all the light and try to attack anyone who comes to visit.

So, anyone, have experience moving a large lady? Palm, that is . . . . :)

why not kill them first, then dig them up

The weight of lies will bring you down / And follow you to every town / Cause nothin happens here

Them big Rhapis don't take kindly to digging and repotting. They kinda sit and stew in their juices for years afterwards.

That appears to be the case. How about dividing them? I've heard that's better, though it defies logic.

Dividing is just as invasive to their system as digging. I like to thin the herd by about half every couple years to allow light in. I know that it's almost heresy for most to cut out and discard a healthy trunk but a man's/lady's gotta do what a man's/lady's gotta do!

Ok, now the full story is coming out, and it's a goodun', yes I know they would have grown back DrG, ok then, dig them up and out they go, end of story, some with lil root systems might be saved, pot 'em etc.pitch fork, pitch black, pitch a tent, put something there in pots, bottles like pots, etc.
