I know from Martin Gibbons about the reverse hybrid Trachycarpus nanus (fem) X T. wagnerianus (masc)

it is easy to dust a Trachycarpus nanus . I have about 50 this way.

dusting a T.wagnerianus (fem) is not easy because of a genetic defect of the wagnerianus bloom.

7 years ago I was successful in dusting a waggie with nanus pollen!

Hello Jost,

Two years ago I pollinated my female Waggie with fresh Nanus pollen.

The result was 120 seeds, of which only five germinated.

To be sure that they they are the Nanus cross, I have to wait and see how the leaves look like.

Last year I did the same with the Waggy and a Fortunei, used pollen out of the fridge from a year before.

The Fortunei gave 65 seeds of which 35 are already germinating.

This time the Waggy aborted the seeds after three month's, probable because there where not enough seeds on the palm to keep it going.(+/-25 seeds only, by the lack of pollen).

I like to try again next year, this year my female Fortunei and Waggy gave no flower stalks.

It is for me difficult to get pollen of Nanus, I have no mature plant, could you help me out next year Jost?

This to find out if the theory concerning the genetic defect on the female Waggy flower is right.

Hi Ad ,

thanks for being interested in breeding trachycarpus species.

I have 2 adult masc. T.nanus and in a year or two some more

nanus , I hope so . Additional I try to buy some more adult masc.

nanus. Keep an eye on your 5 hybrids . We shall help us one another

next year ....if enough pollen is available.

T. wagnerianus X T. princeps would be very interesting. It would be nice to get the leaves of waggy with the white undersides of princeps. Maybe there will be mature princeps in the next few years.

Hello Jost,

I live in Hoorn in the north-west of the Netherlands, this is about 270 km from your place.

So still quite a distance.

As soon as the seedlings show interesting features I will post a photo.

I got a few seedlings of NanusXWinsan from Garry, I have never seen a Trachycarpus seedling growing so fast.

I will post a photo later in the summer,

Dear Jost,

WaggyXNanus first divided leaf is coming.( first photo left)

Not sure that it is the real thing yet.

Have to be patient and wait for more growth.

All these seedlings germinated around March 2012.

The NanusXWinsan is growing very fast!

FortuneiXNanus seedlings are from this year.

The Nanus X Winsan look fabulous, The once I have are much smaller than yours.

Winsan is a fast grower and a hybrid with winsan much more faster than the normal Winsan.

How are these doing now? I recently got a Nanus x Wag or “Naggy” of Patricks making, that I just potted up to 5g… Do you have some updated pics? And that’s Nanus x Wag on the left correct?
