What is the difference between Foxtail & Foxylady seedlings?

You be the judge. What I have noticed is that the width of the foxylady leaves tend to be a little wider and a little more dark hairs on the leaf bases. The foxtails are the ones in community pots, and foxyladies are singles in 1 gal. The foxtails have been grown in some shade, and the foxyladies have been growing in at least 1/2 day Sun. Therefore, you would expect the foxtails to have the wider leaves. If there are variegated foxladies, they are obvious. Anyone else have some pics to add?

The last 3 pics are Foxlady F2 generation, that were collected by a friend.

These are from Seabreeze:

The seeds all had 2 white racing stripes.

Do they all produce these and then some lose the variegation as they age or do the ones that display variegation from the beginning all keep the trait as they age? I ask because I have 3 one leaf seedlings and they all have variegation so I'm just curious if they'll all keep this as adults

Pretty sure they keep their variegation, at this stage we can already see the difference between the variegated lot and the greenies. Apparently when the greenies are much older they can also put out the odd variegated leaf.

Mike Evans. When you germinated the seeds of the foxy lady and the foxtail did you plant them at the same time? If so did they sprout around the same time frame? They say the foxy lady is a rocket but the growth rate appears to be the same as seedlings.

I disagree about one point of this though from what I've seen. Foxtails that I've grown all seem to throw one spear and sit for a long time (weeks to months), at which point they resume normal growth. This is in contrast to the Veitchias that I've sprouted which have gone straight into the next leaf with no pause. The Wodveitchias that I've sprouted exhibited the Veitchia characteristic on this aspect.

The seeds that Mike Evans germinated were F2, there is no guarantee they will be Wodveitchias.

Erik, the Foxtails were planted many months before the F1 Foxyladies. I have numerous large ones in the garden & I would say the Foxladies grow more rapidly. The only exception, would be the ones that are extremely variegated. They seem to have an overall hard time surviving. In fact, about all the foxyladies that exhibited extreme variegation did not survive. Some died at seedling stage, and others just died a slow death, even though they were all grown in shade. The white leaves just self destruct. Here are a few slightly variegated ones. Foxyladies hold the variegation when mature.

I have some experience with these and if the seed is both fox and the hybrid and planted the same time the hybrid seedlings usually are more robust and easy to spot.

Also the variegation seems to be a morphological example of hybrid decline as the greens show hybrid vigor. B)

Can the Veitcha be the host ? Does the variety of Veitchia matter ? :indifferent:

Palms not just a tree also a state of mind

Yes the Veitchia can and has been the host, I had one growing at my former residence , it looks like a Veitchia, with yellowish petioles.

Great second question, one I'd like to have confirmed. I understand the first crop in Queensland grew out of Veitchia joannis, where I believe the very first Foxy Ladys appeared. Those initial FLs from Florida I am led to believe grew out of Veitchia arecina. How different are the two FLs ? I don't know.

Happy Gardening
