Moving to Miami -need suggestions for potted palms for balcony

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Im moving to Coconut Grove in a few weeks and am hoping to get some suggestions on what palms to get that will do well in pots on a balcony. The balcony faces west and gets shade from some royal palms overhead. I want to have some tall, dense, narrow palms that will help with privacy without taking up too much horizontal space. Any suggestions on what species fits that description? Thanks!

Adam - if privacy is your goal, Chamaedorea seifrizii is the way to go. PM me when you hit town. Moose Land is very close to Coconut Grove, established 1873 and is older than the City of Miami.

Coral Gables, FL 8 miles North of Fairchild USDA Zone 10B

you'll have a lot more growing options in Miami than Vegas that's for sure

Philippe, I absolutely love rhapis palms. If I can find some at a good price, i'd love to try them. I would see them for sale at nurseries in Las Vegas, but they were always VERY expensive! The only location I ever saw them growing outdoors successfully was at Bellagio between the fountain and the main entrance. Followed them closely for a few years. They were right next to the building growing in complete shade with a heavy canopy overhead.

Moose, I was looking at Coral Gables too, but everything I liked was $$$. Looks like i'm about 4-5 miles NE or Fairchild. A membership is high on my priority list. So is all of Miami zone 10B? Chamaedorea seifrizii looks like it might just be perfect. Those are the ones that are pretty common as houseplants, right?

Kenny, yeah, I can't wait!! Las Vegas was a pretty harsh place to grow palms. Just a handful of species grew well there. I'm not sure my palm knowledge from the desert will be of much use in Miami.

Theres a concurrent thread also running on Lytocarium wedellianum. Robust grower as an indoor potted palm.

Licuala ramsayi I have growing potted indoors.

Ravenea glauca does well along with Areca triandra.

Best Wishes on your move.

Cheers. Ritchy
