Okay.

Here's a few pictures of my big-ass gigas in 2008.

Life was so beautiful and simple then. All you had to do was walk up to gigas and take close-up pictures.

(Snort, sniffle.)

The base of the trunk. Planted from a 15 gallon in 2006, if I recall.

Shoe is size 13.

American! 12.5" 32 cm long.

The new spear. So pretty.

post-208-0-86488100-1368509177_thumb.jpg

And a full monty shot. Those ropes dangled from the now-gone Cedrus deodar. (Hum a dirge, if you must.)

That very same palm today.

I admit I was staggered at how fast that thing grew and how big it got. The power company wants to give it a haircut.

Too big to move now.

The accepted name is C. obtusa, but there are a lot of old school palm growers and sellers still calling it 'gigas'.

Yes, the gigas get ginormous! Mine is above the second story already. Troy's heading this way today, he'll probably still declare you the winner on the tor tor and the gigas. But this is Central Calif, that ought to count for something. :)

It was a joke. I emphasise was - the past tense of is, since some may still find it funny.

I planted it as a tiny plant when I first moved in and didn't really know the climate that well. It's taken me 14 years of observations to safely call it a 10a, but before I knew that, I wanted to err on the conservative side.

You can't really tell from the photos, but it actually turned out great where it's at. It looks fantastic where it's at, a real center piece.

Mine does 3-4 leaves a year, maybe it's a function of the cool nights here since it comes from the 6,000-8,000 feet range up in Thailand. I've been up there, it's quite a bit cooler than even Santa Cruz. They are also screaming fast up in Santa barbara and Goleta.

I'd wished my C. Urens would come up a little. It sits there for years and it's so slow. Certainly not in the hottest spot and only direct morning sun. Hopefully it'll find the sun sometime in future. It's right up there, baby.

The 2 I have has been sitting in full socal sun from 8am-7pm with absolutely no shade including a few days of mid 90 temp and they've been growing extremely well, our nights drop down quite a bit as well but they can handle full sun without a hitch. They're in 15g buckets and a spike has been growing about 5" last week
