Can anyone help..

What's the difference between Royal Palm(Roystonea Regia) and Majesty Palm (Ravenea Rivularis)??

Thank you

The most obvious difference is the huge, green crownshaft of the royal.

Is that the only difference?

a lot of the majesty palms I've seen have a much larger base to top ratio in the trunk

Hi Nakeel!

Welcome to our group!

There are many differences between a Majesty (Ravenea rivularis) and a Royal (Roystonea).

Here are similarities: Both get really thick in the trunk and tall with time, both want warm temperatures and plenty of water. I'm pretty sure a Royal will grow in Oman (they'll grow in our California desert); not quite so sure about a Majesty.

If you're not wanting to grow one where you are, maybe you could explain what's important to you? We'll be glad to help!

Welcome again!

Royals will grow in full sun with little water, whereas Majesties grow in more shady wet areas. The Majesties are slower growing so have a "stumpier" look where the royals grow very tall fairly quickly.

I have a majesty I purchased a couple of years ago (was pretty small what I bought it), it was neglected and was almost dead while everything in the yard was being completely cleared out. it's been sitting in full sun and regular watering and seems to be doing pretty good with plenty of new fronds although it's a super slow grower in the 15g bucket I have it in .... I've never read how to care for particular plants before this year but always assumed plants need a lot of sun. my neighbor has a pair of pretty massive ones, I think the trunk is at least 3' in diameter at the base and is in 100% full sun but we're somewhat close to the coast so it doesn't get over 90 too often

My experience is that Majesties and Royals both do best in full sun, though I suspect in a desert area majesties might appreciate some shade.

Majesties also have a tendency to suffer from nutrient deficiencies in some soils, usually from problems with magnesium uptake.

Royals will definitely need alot of water int he desert. In florida, naturally they will do fine as they are native. But royals love water and do best with lots of it. the majesty is also much more finicky with micronutrients. Ive seen hugh royals(60+' tall), Ive never seen a big majesty.

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

Perhaps these links to each palm may help you consider the differences further. Once you become a palm nut, lost to the life you once knew, you will observe a myriad of differences in the obvious areas of trunk and crown of leaves etc.

There are a couple of majesties out on Sand Island, by Honolulu Airport in a dry hot, full sun location , and are surviving, although not looking

super healthy, but it is a testament to their durability. I have posted pics before of my father in law's majesties, and they are growing quite quickly

in full sun, but they do get irrigation every other day, in Kuliouou Valley, Oahu.

How about a picture of your line of royals? We'd love to see them.

If you have trouble posting, let me know and I can help.
