That's the man or women who :

spent the most time planting , traveled to the most remote land, collected the most seed, built the biggest greenhouse, fought off the largest varmints, weevil and gophers, pushed the zone farthest, amended the worst soil, pulled the biggest weeds, read the most reference books, created the best canopy - all in pursuit of the title:

" THE PALM NUT "

How about the man or women who posts the most eclectic topics and imaginative questions on PalmTalk? :)

Well, that's a relative thing.

On the one hand, you have people in places like Hawaii who go all out. On the other, you have people in places like Holland, Texas, and New York City, and Cincinnati who plant palms in the ground, too.

Who's nuttier?

You tell me!

Joe. Yep. That's my guy. Maybe Betty. Her too. Sally has pulled some weeds in her time. Nope, sticking with Joe. Joe is "The Palm Nut".

I am with Dave, the folks who plant washingtonias and canary date palms in the ground in zones USDA-8a and colder and get them to not only survive, but to thrive to trunk - now those are true palm nuts. Anyone who collects a lot of seeds and travels a lot for palms and has a garden overrun with palms is probably nuts too. Who's nuttier? Hmmmm.... If you're on PalmTalk, you're probably nuts.

Florida's bad soil makes up for it. :) Can't blame the gophers for not wanting to hang out.

My Dad used that moniker when he got off the phone after an hour conversation with Dr. Marty, the original "Palm Nut".

I would like to nominate Stevetoad! He has come out of nowhere and he seems to know his stuff and love it all. He is also a great Palmtalker and a person I hope to one day meet. Steve has all the right stuff IMO :)

There are several mature Wodyetia bifurcata in my neighborhood--that helps determine my zone, right?

Or they are nervous about drowning in their tunnels when we get 90+ inches of rain per annum. :badday:

if you base this on the physical evidence of the addiction (number of plams planted) then i'd have to say that BO gets my vote.

I think it qualifies if you're like me and have been unusually obsessed with this plant kingdom since a child. And you doodled on your school bookcovers as a student. Joined the IPS as a young person and corresponded (before internet) with folks all over. I began working for plant growers as a young person and promoted palms there (they grew a few mislabeled Trachycarpus as Chamaerops which I pointed out the day I was hired!) . My latest employer comes to me for palm advice, because of my experiences and enthusiasm. I may not have a huge collection personally, but I have seen my hometown become over run with so much more then when I was young! And I like to think all my years of promotion had influenced that. So, I deserve my member name, but I don't pretend to be the "THE" of all!
