Germinating Tahina Spectabilis

Recommended Posts

Posted

The Tahina spectabilis seeds have arrived.

Reading the germination comments on http://www.rarepalmseeds.com/pix/TahSpe.shtml suggests these seeds are really easy to germinate, even in 70F temperatures, but require a deep pot.

Does anyone have any additional good trips for germination?

I will also be looking for some Norcal volunteers in milder climates to help test out this palm here. At $7 a seed, I will be very picky on selecting adoptive parents. :) I have a hunch this palm has some frost tolerance.

Thanks.

This plant does not have sun (in low humidity at least) or frost tolerance as a young plant. It is very thin leaved. Hopefully it gains this with age. I know of 4 planted out in the ground in SoCal and they all burn in winter from sun and cold.

Ok, maybe it's not a hunch and more like wishful thinking.:)

Sounds like It probably won't grow here. I'll just have to save it for our place in Hawaii.:)

I doubt it would but try one anyway. Crazier things have happened.
