Orange Crush gets a New C/ Shaft

Featured Replies

Yes, a new C/shaft on Dypsis Piluifera is "Bright Orange indeed", gotta Love the "white rings " on the "lime green trunk" too :) I didn't "wet" the palm for pics, it was behind the "old "C/shaft , 1st shot shows old C/shaft still attached. :) Pete

NICE!

Very nice Pete, what's the approx diameter of the trunk and height of crownshaft? I want to estimate how many more years (decades?!) I have to wait for such a display.

cheers

Glad there is still enough light to take a few pics for you Rich for you to get a better look with Laila for scale who is 5ft 8" :) Once they "start" to trunk "off they rocket", Piluifera is a "beautiful" Dypsis. Pete :)

Another gorgeous palm, Pete! Can't wait until I can finally check on my tiny one this weekend.

Cindy Adair

I have 20 seeds sitting in front of me that want to grow up big and strong :) I've shown them your pictures for inspiration.

Amazing palms as usual Pete! How many rings do you get a year now?

Grateful to have what I have, Les amis de mes amis sont mes amis!

Pete,

One of my absolute favorites, and yours look simply stunning! Love that color! :)

Many thanks Pete. Here's mine. Seems to be accelerating and telescoping in the stem but still only a 1.5 leaf per year palm in our climate. Petiole is now absent on the newest leaf so does appear to be entering a new phase. Also about to open a leaf which will make 5 good leaves which is a big improvement on 3 with brown tips. Crownshaft about 60cm and leaves about 3m. A few years to wait for trunk rings I guess but I'm really enjoying the ride with this one and conscious it could all go horribly wrong with one bad winter!.

Looking great Pete. Mine is beginning to form a crownshaft.

A question: does the crownshaft continue to grow to full size before trunk is formed or does it gradually get longer as the trunk develops.

That's a beautiful palm. Definitely on my wish list.

Well I only have one but seems to get better and better with age and no doubt our high humidity helps. I think it's four years in-ground now. It's in part sun in a permanently wet area near the bottom of a clay bank but I dug a pit under where the palm is now planted and filled it with scoria grit and installed a drainage pipe. Also put in a loose rock retaining wall below and dug a ditch at the bottom of the bank to keep the water moving. All up it was one hell of a job! I'm hoping it will now start to build up more leaves.

Thanks all. :) Matty re C shaft, i think i use that a bit here on PT glad you like it :) Brod, re your question, sorry can't remember :) Cheers Len , and Rastev, find some and enjoy watching them grow . Pete

Brilliant stuff, I wish I had heat with my humidity, or more humidity when it is cool...

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Will this palm grow in 10A Florida zone Hot hot summers and cool dry winters?

Dreaming about "Orange Crush"!

Rick wrote he planted a triple, but is this species naturally clumping ?

Like Eric, I have seedlings in the nursery, and I look forward to planting them in the soil, I've shown them your pictures for inspiration too! :)

Should I plant them in full sun? seeing Bo's palms, it seems they enjoy full sun.
