Simple Success for Dictyocaryum

Featured Replies

Is this palm a grow or no grow in Florida?

Zone 9b pine flatlands

This thread is a little depressing. I am like a reformed addict, I've wasted many thousands of dollars on plants that never had any chance here, but got to the point I was almost cured. I can feel it coming back, maybe they will grow here in my cool/mild frost free site after all....

Waimarama New Zealand (39.5S, 177E)

Oceanic temperate

summer 25C/15C

winter 15C/6C

No frost, no heat

Still waiting on my seed. Excited though. Have you guys got any tips for germination success? Baggy method?

Mine is about the same age as yours ,but is a shorter, stockier plant. They are slow for me so far.

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

My best still only the size of post 1! Too cool here but keeping some alive at least. If only I had a hot house to get some up to a good size.

Looking good, Pedro. Do these palms have a silver underside or is it because it's a night pic?

Nice Pete! Mine still live but after two years in the ground in the manner you suggested they are still pretty slow. I assume it is due to the stale and hot climate here relative to you. By the way, I have not forgot about your seed. My Caesia is seeding hard now and I'll have plenty of extra within a short time without relying on the other seed source that kept "disappearing".

Pete,

Nice progress and there's already some color at the base. Will get much more visible and intense over the next couple of years. My larger ones are about the same size as yours, and this is when it begins to get exciting with more color! :)

Thanks all for comments.

dmc, if I dig down I can see visible trunk, ( pic below) I like to keep the prop roots covered here so they are always moist and humid esp when young and when the next leaf falls trunk will very much be visible.

Scott, thought I'd put a can beside for scale, amazed they are slow in your primo climate. btw. they respond "very well" to Nutricote total and just a little bit :)

Rich, a little hot house dome over planted dictyocaryums would be very beneficial in your climate for sure , they certainly "put on growth" during hot weather and weve had plenty of days near 40c already this spring/summer.

Mike, they do have the white/silver underside just like ceroxylons and yes the flash "intensifies it".

Jason, great to hear yours are alive ,hope they do well, do you use Nutricote ? re caesia, I didnt at all think you'd forgotten but thanks for reminding me :)

Bo, I saw in your one of your posts you had a good number close to your house and no doubt you have plenty more in your garden incl Kims group of 5 or 7 which must be getting some size now. Its been great fun seeing these 4 "trial" palms "succeed" and learn how they respond "best" in a climate here, and as the pic shows below I have plenty more to go "in ground" this growing season and very much look fwd to the colour intensifying and growth and width gaining. All good fun eh :)

To all, as 1 of the pics show, I planted another 2 in this area and yes they are very close to each other but what the heck, why not plant a double.

Also, thanks "Very Much" to TOBY and crew/ Rarepalmseeds for the Fresh Dictyocaryum seed. :greenthumb:
