Howdyall:

I have a car that I want to keep, but don't plan to drive much.

I don't want to go to the trouble and expense of building a permanent structure for it. I want to keep the hot sun off it when it's not being driven. (Plus covers for the tires.)

I'd like to get one of those car covers you used to see all over the place, but now don't. Anyone have any thoughts, experiences, etc. about some you or others near you have used?

I'm sure at least a few of us here will have some thoughts.

Thanks in advance for your thoughful input.

Dave

Dave, Dragging a car cover over a dusty or dirty car will just scratch the heck out of it. Even a covered clean car will still get gritty & dirty due to wind. It will keep the sun off though.

I haven't used a car cover in several decades, but the last car cover I purchased was one made by Beverly Hills Car Covers. It was for my 1971 Lincoln Mark III, and was a custom fit for this car. At the time I believe it was about the best car cover one could buy.

But a good car cover has to breath (It can't be vinyl or vinyl coated), so that moisture can't be trapped under the cover, as it will cause water marks and cloudiness in the paint job, at least in the old days. Maybe clear coat paints may be okay, I don't really know.

But any good car cover is only going to protect the paint job so far. Fine dirt is still going to penetrate through. But at least the cover will protect the paint from UV rays, small falling tree debris, like acorns, pine cones, small twigs, etc., and keep such accumulation off the car.

I would do a Google search and read up on different manufacturer car covers, their claims, customer comments, etc.,

And that '71 Lincoln Mark III, I sold it in 1984 because it required leaded high test gasoline (the feds madated the elimination of lead in the gasoline, and octane at the pumps dropped). Even using the highest octane pump gas, the engine would ping/knock badly under hard acceleration, and I had to use 104 Octane Booster supplement everytime I gassed up and/or retard the ignition timing (but that killed performance). I really liked this car, as it had great lines and was a personalized luxury car and had kick-butt performance.

However, I held on to the car cover and have it to this very day. I use my car cover to cover multiple ixora shrubs or other frost/cold tender shrubs! So it is still serving me after all these years!
