I was wondering what this palm is. Impulse purchase on the trot through a plant market in SAsia, thinking it was some kind of Dypsis but Im not so sure now. It grows fast and is clumping already, sent up two more stems in the month it has been in the ground. So far from the first true leaf to this one the red is persistant right up until the leaf is fully mature so three or four weeks, the stem base isn't quite round just a bit triangle, leaf base and up the midrib lightly covered in white granules which I thought was an outbreak of plant louse but is in fact tormentum and the leaflets are square cut.

Not much else I can say about it other than its a delight with the new leaf, anyone know it?

I think not a Dypsis, maybe a Pinanga?

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Looks like a little Ptychosperma of some sort.

Yes it looks like it could be Ptychosperma, it looks like it will have a lot of colour on the mid ribs and crown shaft and rachis , if you look carefully you will see broad stripes on the new rachis. I think it will be a tiny little palm (smaller than waitianum) as everything is very delicate and thin thin thin thin needle thin dark almost black older rachis, the new shoots tiny, except the leaflets which are flat broad and longish.

There are though also Pinagas popping out the wood works left right and centre suddenly and all extremely nice too. It does love water there is a bit of a spring in the area keeping things mossy and moist
