Areca sp. "Wahbo" ?

Featured Replies

Does anyone have any information on this palm? A certain local palm nursery has a few seedlings in stock, but I can't find much about them. The seed is about 2-3 times the size of A. catechu. Maybe Napalm can get one to torture test for me :mrlooney:

Haha. Oh man. The ego took a battering when that macrocalyx carked it.this dry cold wind is making the easiest of palms difficult. Ive seen these around too and often wondered about them. Looking forward to see what people know

The only closest thing to this name that I've heard of is, Ptychosperma sp. Wotoboho. But as far as a species of Areca, nothing close to this name. Do you have a picture of the palm? It could be something that is already in cultivation, but under it's correct name.

I'll have to get a picture. These seedlings were around 60cm tall with broad uneven leaflets, fairly dark green, with seeds about 2-3 times the size of A. catechu. It looked a lot like A. triandra at this size, with the exception of the huge seed.

Sounds like something we would have seen in Thailand. I looked through my photos, but didn't see anything labeled as such. Maybe I was thinking of the

one Jeff mentioned. P. wotoboho.

Sorry, can it be Actinorhytis callaparia, who grows in Srilanka mixed with Areca catechu and called by villagers "Ali-puwak" ; elephant-Areca?

I posted photos of Actinorhytis today, you can com are seedlings pictures.

Yes Phil, your Areca is certainly Areca Warbo which comes from PNG..The Goose sized seed tells all, I remember seeing Clayton ( Utopiapalmsandcycads) with a "bucket full" of these huge seeds years ago.. Keen smart collector Arden of Equatorialexotics has seeding specimens of Areca Warbo,....,note spelling.... WARBO Not Wahbo . :) Pete

Below is a pic from Utopiapalmsandcycads of Mike Ferrero with Areca Warbo.

Can Actinorhytis and Areca do hybrids?

The seeds and seedling on my photos are Actinorhytis from a tree growing on the roadside (Sri Lanka); fruits are red when ripe.

first picture in april, second photo same tree in august, fruits weren't ripe when harvested but seeds have grown.

Where does Areca sp.Warbo come from?

Thanks for the correction :) From the look of it, I have nowhere near enough shade to keep this one alive.

Good news they live in your climate. I got two ready to go in.

Ruchard

It is a form of catechu from my understanding and is stocky and strong with a large seed. Norm at Conway has a fruiting tree

Col, if what Kris says above about the location is right, then these are lowland equatorial...

Google earth tells me that Warbo, is at 200m altitude, 0.5 south.

Might be a zone push at Wollongong?

The two I have faced lows down to 2 degrees Celsius in the greenhouse. I was surprised they took that without any sign of being cold. Not sure what Wollongong gets in low temps but definitely a protected spot for sure.
Richard

I might have to sneak that one into the hothouse
