Palm Rasslin' at Guada La Habra in

Recommended Posts

It's the end of August in Southern California, and a guy's thoughts turn lightly to palm rasslin'. That is, removing palms from the ground, and bodily heave-ho-ing them someplace else.

Here's a Trachy fortunei, removed from the ground by our beloved Palmazon . . .

Flexing his massive muscles for the camera.

We had another to remove, which was a parajube tor tor, hopefully, we didn't tor-tor it too much . . .

No, it's not partied out, just had the rootball removed.

This palm, along with the previous Trachy were trenched back in May.

That's a good score. Will they be ok with such a small rootball? Why did you dig them out?

That tor-tor was going to get huge, and I had a couple others already. I'm having a couple more removed as well.

That trachy was in the way, and I didn't want to just kill it. It's really nice, and in a pot, waiting for someone to love it and reroot . . .

Yeah, palm removal(if you want them to live) is not an easy thing to do... Thanks for sharing Dave.

Yeah, I understand the doubts about the parajube.

That's why I waited so long.

They survive much better if trenched first.

I didn't charge the recipient, so he's got nothing to lose. Hope it makes it.

I've got lots more in pots, awaiting a Public Palm PlaceTM to plant them in.

I think there is a chance it will make it, not that I would recommend such treatment. I know of one similarly brutalised which was then dumped into a winter boggy clay pit and thrived! I don't care what anybody says here, I know parajubs love heavy soil and a lot of water.

There are other places, and parajubes are a perfect palm for that.

GT, Trachy's totally rock in places too cold for anything other than Sabal minor and Rhapidiophyllum hystrix. I can't grow them here (Trachycarpus, that is), but they grew pretty darn well in frosty Central North Carolina where average lows were below freezing for 90 consecutive days! They looked pretty snazzy in the snow too. Loved it when people's say "whatcha gonna do with that palm when it snows". I just said "take a pitchur (translation: picture)" & smiled. Sometimes' I'd say, "you want one"? Usually they said "yes" so I'd give them a little one gallon. Dang things's set seed and sprouted everywhere. It was cool spreading palms around that cold climate. No doubt that on a 5F/-15C with, with 6"/15cm of snow T. fortunei was my favorite palm (at least my favorite palm in my yard!) B)
