Well, it's August, and 20 years ago, Hurricane Andrew hit Miami and Louisiana and packed a wallop.

I'll never forget seeing on the news how Burger King's Miami headquarters was just trashed. And, one of my favorite greenhouses, Jones and Scully, in "Back Bay" blew away forever. And mile after mile in Homestead was reduced to . . . nothing but piles of busted wood. How palm after palm had to be "red tagged" at Fairchild. Horrifying, heartbreaking.

Here's a link to wikipedia, but I know some PalmTalkers are H. Andrew survivors, and, I hope, see fit to share their stories . . . .

Impressive video. Thanks for posting it. Certainly I've ridden out several hurricanes in Virginia Beach over the last 30 years and soon I'll move to Puerto Rico where hurricanes often visit. I still can't really grasp the horror and destruction of a monster storm like Andrew. Yet, visiting Fairchild Gardens and Homestead, Florida now it looks as if nothing happened. I guess every area has some sort of increased risk of natural disaster whether hurricane, earthquake, tornado, wildfires, snow storms.... I certainly hope Isaac turns out to be a relatively minor storm for all.

After watching the video, it brought back lots of memories, with a few goose bumps along the way. I spent the night in my first home in Pembroke Pines, all the windows were boarded up, and no lights. Just a few candles placed throughout the house and several flashlights laying around. Very, very errie.

One little palm story I'd like to share, at the time Marojejya darianii was extreamly rare and very few plants existed. A few months prior to the storm hitting, I had ordered ( jumped at the opportunity!!! )1,000 seeds and had 800 planted in small individual pots. I was so scared of loosing them, I put all the trays under our deck of our office, figuring low to the ground they would be somewhat safer. And they were, they survived beautifully, with still lots of damage to the nursery.

It's hard to believe it's been 20 years now......

There was a interest in palms prior to Hurricane Andrew. Hurricane Andrew really accelerated my palm fascination. After seeing the massive destruction of Miami-Dade County's tree canopy, my observations noted that the palms had a very high survival rate. Many palms were left with no leaves but recovered much faster than other plants. The first green in many areas were from new leaf spears getting pushed out. Most palms' structural design give up their leaves in heavy wind and remain standing. :greenthumb:

Mooseland was purchased 18 years ago (2 years after Andrew). Having limited vegetation, I began exclusively planting palms based upon these observations made from the aftermath of Andrew. B)

How about an overall rooftop shot of Mooseland?

I had a cousin living in Homestead at the time. Lost his home entirely and one heck of a garden, too. Whole thing was bulldozer fodder after Andrew was done.

Prior to getting married and the move to Coral Gables, I was living SW of the Country Walk area. This area got hammered very hard but not as severe as Homestead, FL. While living there, I of course planted palms. Entire neighborhoods for miles around were so devastated, all had to be raised and rebuilt from slab on up. Several of the palms I planted survived although all fronds were whipped off. In the aftermath, spear leaves were quickly pushed and fronds began to appear. It is hard to comprehend unless you have experienced it. Lush green South Dade had almost every landscape plant gone. It was a moonscape. Anything green was something to behold.

Looking at the devastation in the Philippines, one thing you see is a lot of coconut palms that don't actually look too bad. The fastest wind speeds recorded of any cyclone and the coconuts still hold strong.

Whoa.

It's going to be interesting to see what the area looks like in a few months. I hope better.

I hope the body count is less than feared.
