Sy. botryophora seeds from Gileno

Featured Replies

Hey all. I know several of us got Syagrus botryophora seeds from Gileno recently. I just checked on my seeds and I have 2 out of 4 with germination activity. I cracked the seeds and sowed them a little over a month back, and had 4 out of 5 viable seeds, the other one had been eaten by a nasty little bugger. How are everyone else's seeds/seedlings doing? Did you crack them, or leave them whole? Thanks.

Zac,

I got a bag of Syagrus botryophora and Phoenicophorium borsigianum seeds. ALL of the latter germinated. The Syagrus seeds didn't move until I read in here about cracking the endocarp. So I tried, and the whole endocarp came out. Two germinated, one of them damped off due to medium too wet. Once I corrected the problem, the last one that germinated is growing downwards nicely. The remaining 5 or so are not moving yet...

Yes, thank you Gileno the seed fairy.  I cracked all the endocarps.  Germination w/ bottom heat of about 95F started to occur 17 days later.  I got 4 germinated, out of the baggies, and into medium.  They subsequently rotted.  Also, most of the remaining seeds looked like they had popped and the new little root turned mushy and rotted. :(   I took all the remaining seeds, maybe about 6 or so, and placed them into a community pot and they are sitting in my greenhouse.  Maybe someday one will decide to resurect itself, but I doubt it.  I suck at this, but I think I'm getting better.  The last batch Gileno sent me: Gaussia maya 100% germination and all are bifid now,

Caryota urens 90% germination, waiting for leaves,

Astrycaryum vulgare, sitting in the baggie but not rotting :)   What a nice guy Gileno is to share his palms with us.  Thanks Gileno!

Thanks for the info guys. I see Riffle moved this topic over here. Sorry about that Bob. With all of the new fora available on this site, I completely forgot there was SEED GERMINATION in bold letters.

Mine are all in community pots BTW, but i have them in this screen cage thing to prevent predation of big, precleaned Syagrus seeds by the local tree rats.

Ahhh yes, notice the dirty paws from rummaging around for seed in palm trees.
