I just recently purchased a Tahina Spec in a 7 gallon pot. I have done enough research to know that this will be a massive palm but will it be Corphya U. Big? Any one have any growing experience. I also have a 15g Borassus. I live a big fan palm

Thanks in advance

As you probably know, this palm is a recent discovery, with seed collected and distributed in 2008 (I think it was - not checking dates to verify). So nobody has but a few years of growing experience with Tahina in cultivation. In habitat, of course we know it to be massive, probably comparable to Corypha, so plan accordingly and keep it more than 2 ft. from your house.

I have one in the ground and I would describe it as slow, but not the slowest palm by any means. While it has gained very little in height so far, each fan is remarkably greater in diameter and I'm looking forward to it "getting off the ground" soon.

Recently I've had a bout with scale, probably not enough air circulation with the fans growing so packed together. Also this palm really needs the micronutrients; use a good palm fertilizer.

I finally got mine in the ground. Paul said that it's too close to the path because it's going to get huge. Hopefully he's right.

Thanks Kim! All the research says its a remote germinator so it stays pretty low to the ground for a few years. I have it planted in an area of my garden that has plenty of room. I convinced my wife it stays kinda small. She is gonna be pissed in a few years...

Mine was dug up by the chooks, it may have been out of the ground for 24 hours or more by the time I discovered this. I put it back in the ground and so far it is staying alive, bit off colour but otherwsie ok. This looks to be a tough palm. Mine is only inches tall.

Happy Gardening

For me Tahina has been a strong and steady grower/ Practically problem free but then I I live in the tropics.

When I put it in the ground I noticed that it slowed down a bit ( compared to my others still in the pot) but when It started putting out leaves again it did so with a vengeance!. The leaves were about a foot wider each time it came out and the petioles were also significantly taller too.

It takes full sun pretty well--in fact I think it craves it.

I get the impression from photos that it is about as large as Bismarkia nobilis but not as large as Corypha. I planted it in a spot with a lot of space but the 2 royal palms beside it sometimes damage it when their old leaves fall on it.

Here's a nice picture I got last month. The new leaf caught the sun.

Matty - I've been holding off. Honestly, I am afraid if I kill it, I won't be able to forgive myself. It's probably cruel leaving it in the container.

Help - I need convincing (or confidence) to make the plunge ...

Thanks guys. I'm planting it tomorrow. I live in south Florida so I'm sure it will take off.

I would plant it Moose. I have two in the ground and while (3years) slow they have had no problems. The one that gets the most sun now has leaves that are almost 5' across.

Get these palms in the ground! It's not really a palm that your going to containerize for a lengthy time. Moose, this palm is going to thrive here in south Florida. But...don't expect much growth in the first year after it's planted.

Planted mine today!! Had to cut the 7 gallon container off due to the roots being insane. I'm looking forward to watching it grow and die in about 50 years. I'm glad I got into palms early!!

Boy Gene, that's a beauty. It's really grown since you first started posting pictures of it.

I’m back after a long posting hiatus, here’s a picture of the Tahina about 12 years since planting, it’s really been cranking for the past 6 months.
