Help with my Bismarckia or is it aready a goner?

Featured Replies

I think I confront a major problem with it. Though external leaves seem allright the two newest fronds have dried off as well as the obvious part of the spears (no spearpull though) in the past months. I have applied twoice fungicide for stem fungus but till now I have not observed any new growth, only stabilization. Shall I continue with application of fungicide or perform some surgery? I was also very unlucky cause in the previous months a sprinkler from the irrigation system has malfunctioned and the plant was getting watered while it should not.

I think it is better if you do some minor surgery.

Giuseppe, what you see, is not a chewed leaf or spear, but the remnant of a sawed unfoldung leaf. I had to clear all dead fronds and spears, so that some access to the growing point can be enabled for the fungicide application. What are actually the symptoms of an rpw-infestation by Bismarckia? I have no clue, but I assume they are the same as by other palms (chew signs on new leaves). In my case there was not such indication, but last summer I saw a weevil popping out a leaf base, as I was spraying preventively the plant with insecticide. In past autumn this plant produced 5 new leaves and two more were on their way in the winter. I think I have overdone it with foliar spray of insecticides and the combination of a very wet and cold winter together with the accidental watering during spring induced the appearance of stem-fungus.

@ Harry: Harry maybe you are right, but I have absolutely no experience on palm-surgery especially on large specimens, where a chain-saw is needed!

yes I agree with you, but I am sure that the palm will recover
