Coconut palms on the Arabian Peninsula

Featured Replies

Well, a number of people got into a vociferous disagreement with me that coconuts grew along the coast of the Arabian peninsula.

Here's proof in the picture ("Coconut palms line corniches of Oman (Al Hafa)."):

Wow that is a great pic. I wonder if sometimes those coconuts fall on to the traffic below?

I second that, have lived there and seen them. East Coast, West Coast and UAE.

Coconuts very common in Dubai and Oman, though often look pretty fried if not sufficiently irrigated, with plenty of water they look good.

Goggle map Salalah and see plenty of palms even from the satellite views.

Hmm. Sounds like you get around.

THere's this AWESOME town square/center wherever in Arabia, in general, with a magnificent Row o'Royals. I saw it in a picture one day, a travel mag, I think.

And arabesque buildings, egad, wanna scream.

Know where that is? I'd love to know

I remember being impressed by pictures of some huge Hyphaene thebaica being used as avenue trees in Saudi Arabia

Lots of coconuts in Saudi Arabia's coasts, both east and west coasts. Royal palms can be seen in the capitol, Riyadh, but too cold in winter for coconuts. Riyadh is the same latitude as Miami, with similar lowest lows but generally much hotter year round,(125°F in summer).

Here are some in Dubai. The whitish coloring on the fronds is salt buildup from the constant breezes. Many of the resorts powerwash the palms a couple times a week.

Did some work over there in 2010. The Omanis are about the nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet! And yes, they can easily grow the cocos!
