I got a small seedling of Licuala fordiana and I have not found alot of information on them..... Has anyone try to grow them??

They seem easy to grow... my little guy has been outside all year... its in part sun and has not burned and never has gotten cold damage down to about 30F... It is still in a pot.. I want to plant it out but would like info on its requirements :hmm: sun, moisture, soil and cold tolerance!!!

Its native to China and the island of Hainan...

Below is a picture of Licuala fordiana, I got from the net....

That one looks like it is in sun and is quite different to the picture on RPS. I doubt many have tried this palm in your conditions.... Good luck!

Being from southern China, its supposed to have some cold hardiness. It is also a small palm, usually trunkless 3-5ft tall. I grew some from seed from RPS and just planted some out this spring.

Thanks Richard, yes this is a difficult time for me and our 5 children. Pete is destined to be in Great health very soon before we all leave to our favourite family getaways of Thailand. Here is a pic Pete took just over a year ago, he loves Licualas.. Cassandra post-0-030658500 1337916833_thumb.jpg

I have L.fordiana growing here too, and can say it is the hardiest Licuala I have...it takes drought, heat, freezing etc without a mark on it...

Gold Coast, Queensland Latitude 28S. Mild, Humid Subtropical climate. Rainfall - not consistent enough!

I am very glad to hear Pete will be able to make a full recovery. I have two Licuala fordianas and they are trouble free. Still small though...

Thanks for all this information. I've been considering L. fordiana for several years but hadn't found out enough info to know whether it can survive my climate.

I hope Pete has full recovery!!! and will be ok....

Thanks everyone for the info on this palm....

I sounds like it will be a nice palm and not to hard to grow... I have growen other Licualas species, but most need shade and a moist soil to do ok.... maybe this new species will be different....
