Since we have not done a poll in awhile - here is one. I am limited to only 10 choices. I am sure many worthy canidates were left out. Please feel free to correct my omissions (as I am sure you will) LOL . The choices are in alphabetical order to eliminate a bias of the que. Forum user name is in ( ).

Too hard of a poll since I have not met these people or seen their gardens but my guess the answer for all three is Jeff Marcus.

Yes, I defer to him... but voted from the ones here... :P

I agree, I only have about 120 dypsis in the ground, representing almost 50 species. But I can't touch Jeff in quantity or size for dypsis in the garden. And in pots, nobody would come close to Jeff (yes, he is a forum/IPS member). Throw in his travel to Madagascar with Dransfield, his presentations, providing herbarium specimens, and time on the phone with seed collectors and customers - and it would be hard to find a bigger freak.

And I'll bet you that Bill Austin and Jerry Andersen have more dypsis "mojo" than the rest of us as well. And you can't forget KPL (Bo's old garden) for quantity and number of specimens.

Yeah, hard to keep up with Marcus, Clayton and Jerry as they can basically go direct to aquire. Bill living so close to Jeff makes it easy too. Can't keep up with those guys.

I would love to be able to see Clayton's one day, and Jerry's, Bo's, and Dean's are great gardens. I am really impressed with what Dean is doing with his, but hands down nothing I have seen on line or in person comes even close to what Jeff has done in my opinion . I went by Jeff's fri, to do a little horse trading and I am always just blow away, Yes I am VERY fortunate to live so close.

I have to admit, It is funny that I actually posted before voting... I think I am noticing a trend on one of the questions...

Again.. I bow before so many others.. just a big fan... and also a little funny, I consider my self a bigger New Caledonia fan than a Dypsis fan.. I think its just cause I keep jabbering on incessantly about new cal and Dypsis.. :D

I can explain, Jeff Marcus IMO, would qualify as the biggest Dypsis freak, has the largest collection of Dypsis species, maybe more Dypsis trees in the ground and the most mature, fruiting species of Dypsis than anyone here. In a league of his own. And he has dedicated his life to collecting and growing palms in which he can offer anyone in the world the opportunity to grow some themselves.

So, maybe what Moose meant, those in the poll are Palm Talk contributors, where as Jeff dosen't.

I don't know about the biggest, but I've spent some considerable time with Bill in the bush and I would rank him at that time in the "top 5" for having a vast amount of knowledge. Vast.

Unfortunately Bill would have to be classified as an ex-forum member. Why don't some of you who know him well ask him if he would consider giving PT another try. Let him know things are more peaceful and loving around here. :) We would really benefit from his participation.

There are so many Dypsis collectors that were not even named in this poll.

From my travels I would separate the collectors in four distinct locations as follows:

1. Queensland-Australia where you have Arden Dearden, Clayton York ,Bill Beatie and others.

2. Hawaii-USA where you have Jeff Marcus, Bo Lundquist, Jerry Andersen, Dean Ouer and others

3. California-USA where you have Marty Darian, Ron Lawyer, Len Geiger, Gary Levine, Greg Hamman, Bob Deyoung, Rick Cerino,Bill Sanford, myself and countless others

4. Florida-USA where you have Jeff Searle, Peter Balasky and several others

All that said I would say Jeff Marcus is the man and he continues to constantly add to his collection through collecting in habitat as well as describing new cultivated species.

The best part is this fraternity of collectors largely shares information and seeds and all of us will see our collections continue to expand.
