I know most people here have a copy of the first edition but the new edition is about to be released and Overstock.com has it more than 40% off. If the new edition has improved the content and updated the names of palms since the last edition, this is a book to not miss. Here is the link to the Overstock.com page. The Palm Bible. I have looked at all book websites and this is the lowest price you'll find. Yes it is cheaper than Amazon.com.

For all you dads out there, make it easier for your wife or love one, it would make a great Fathers Day gift. Much easier for her to buy than searching around and buying a palm for you. Although, not a bad runner up gift either. :D

That is what happens when you write "plant" and "palm" too many times.. you get a PLAM. I saw it after I posted it but could not edit the topic.

Thanks, Leo. I got my copy on order too. I've put a lot of miles on my original book. My husband said, "But it's autographed." (by Paul Craft). Well, I'll have to get Paul and Scott Zona to autograph my 2nd edition.

The first edition has been my "go to" book for many years. The way it was laid out made it a breeze to find what I was looking for in a snap. If I had to keep only one palm book - this would be it. The new edition can only be better.

That is definitely the cheapest price I have seen considering the book is listed at $59.95. I received my advance copy this past Monday and am quite happy with the way it came out. It will take about another month for the slow boat to arrive from China to stock bookshelves everywhere.

Changes in this edition include numerous additional species in cultivation that were not in the original, all the taxonomic changes, including recent ones such as the resurrection of the genus Saribus and the new genus Lanonia, and about 75% of the photos are new.

Scott Zona co-authored this edition with me and we think Bob Riffle would be pleased :winkie:

They won't deliver to NZ, grrr! Will have to get one sent to family in UK. This is a must have book. The internet is no substitute because you don't know what you don't know until leafing through a book like this. Mine never leaves my arm chair. Just need a new PoM now to go with GP2 and we will be all up to date.

You could always get it from Amazon.com. They are $2 more expensive but still a great price.

That's for the updates to this book. After reading the first edition more times than I care to admit, I'm glad the second edition is coming soon so my wife stops saying, "are you looking at the same book again?" I'd also like to say that it was nice meeting you at thr PSSC meeting in January.

Leo, thanks a lot for starting this thread and alerting everyone to a must-have-book! :)

And Paul, you and Bob did a fantastic job with the first one, and I know the new one will be just as good, if not better. Thanks to you and Scott! :) This is definitely going to be the book that I will recommend to anyone who asks what palmbook to buy. The balance between information ("readability") and photos is about as perfect as it gets! :)

Amazon worked and it was cheaper! US$45 (including a $10 shipping charge to NZ) that's a fantastic bargain, books here (even paperbacks) cost an absolute fortune.

I actually have a note on my old fashioned calendar on my refrigerator marking June 21 as the day my preordered copy should arrive at my door. All the "must remember" dates like Birthdays, dates to mail bill payments,Doctor's appointments for our entire family and Palm book arrivals go there.

Does anyone know if this book will encompass the new changes to Veitchia and Drymophloeus That Dr. Zona was working on? I would hope it does...

We were not sure when those changes would be published nearly a year and a half ago when we finished the book. In the book, it is noted under certain Drymophloeus species that they may well change to be Veitchia, but the actual name changes for those species was not done.

$ 42.22 AU Free shipping - through Fishpond

I Ordered mine in January and my latest update said it was released to the warehouse and they expect to ship it on the 25th July.

I think Fishpond is mainly for Aus and NZ, and it's where I get all my plant books from at a price that's often better than Amazon.

Timber Press's blurb page.

The Overstock,com price is amazing.

The Encyclopedia is worth having even if you have more technical books, just because it's so easy to use and has such relevant information for the gardener. It's an extraordinarily clever book. It went with me to Epcot when I helped staff the Central Florida Palm and Cycad Society's table at the garden festival.

I'll probably go for the signed copy.

Well as you lot were unreasonably stingy and wouldnt shout a poor old lady a book, I had to buy my own. :o Naturally when I had the money to spare our dollar was lower than USD so it ended up at $44, but considering the potential use I will get out of it, it's money well spent. The poochies have promised to harass the postman until it arrives.

My copy from Licuala showed up this morning, neatly packaged. How did those autographs manage to sneak into what looks very much like factory packaging?

A quick look shows revisions everywhere, some 30 more photos, guides to pronouncing names, a nice 2-page list of "botanical gardens and public collections with significant palm collections" (heavy on Florida), I like the new text for Dypsis plumosa, which deserves to be in central Florida yards.

The Preface recommends Henderson's Evolution and Ecology of Palms (2002), which is available from the New York Botanical Garden for $35. For some reason, I hadn't heard of this book.
