Definitely spectacular! And a bit of a good news-bad news scenario since this is the beginning of the end. I have seen these in Fiji after they had finished flowering and it's not a pretty sight! But enjoy the show while it lasts. :) A couple of years I think. :)

Bruce,

Metroxylon amicarum will keep on going, but all the other species in the genus are monocarpic (they die after flowering).

Bo...since Amicarium is the only one that does not die...why is it so difficult to get seeds ?

I wish I knew. Even here it's difficult. There are a few fruiting individuals on the Big Island, and seedlings are available, but only in very small numbers. And you have to know whom to contact. Jules Gervais, HIPS member and President of the IPS some 20 years ago, actually sold some of his at one of the Saturday markets in Hilo. No idea if he still does.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

Mike,

That's bad news for sure, considering the time and expense removing such a large palm. Well, I hope you do get some good seed to set. I'll take a look the next time I'm over.

Thanks for the information Bo, I appreciate it, amicarium is also difficult to get here usually.

I am actually very surprised it is flowering after all our cold spells, but is great to see. The seed should drop like flies when its ready, try keeping a net around it to keep them from falling in the lake?

Mike had the Croton Society Meeting end at his house for an auction and I managed to get a couple shots of the progression of the bloom! It is certainly a sight to see!
