Heading to the Big Island

Featured Replies

Hi all. Like the post said, my lovely wife and I are heading out to the big island of Hawaii next week for a vacation (finally!). It's been about 6 years since we were last there. We're looking for some destinations. We remember a nice park in the northern part of the island, and also the zoo. We'll probably hit both for some palmy inspiration.

Any other places to recommend for our adventure?

Thanks in advance!

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

Hot, dry summers. Cold, wet winters.

Leave the wife home and take me. I get invited to all the best gardens. :P

Pat,

Tempting as it may be, I am not going to comment on Peachy's suggestion! Not aware of any park in the northern part of the Big Island, though. But yes, you have the Panaewa Zoo, a couple of miles south of Hilo. Much more than a zoo. More like a botanical garden. And Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden along the old Scenic Route (by Onomea Bay), a handful of miles north of Hilo. Also the World Botanical Garden, right off Highway 19, another dozen or so miles north of Hilo. Other than that, primarily private gardens. Meaning you need invitations from the owners.

Where will you be staying? Feel free to contact me if you're going to be out in the Pahoa area, half an hour south of Hilo.

Whale watching is good right now. Not palmy, but it can be pretty exciting. :)

And while we're at it, let's throw in the Kilauea Iki hike in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. :) And a drive along scenic Highway 137 in lower Puna. :) And a visit to an untouched and brand new blacksand beach, near Kalapana (that's my sister and brother-in-law). :)

Pat:

Do check out Bo's place and nearby.

As you may have seen from the pictures, those gardens are all envy candy . . .

Thanks all for the thoughts. I definitely appreciate it!

Peachy- sounds like a sweet offer, I'd send you a ticket if I could, but alas I can barely afford the airfare from only California. Australian airfare would most certainly clean out the pocket book, and then how would I go whale watching???wink-1.gif

Bo, thanks. The place I was thinking of was the HTBG, It was just a vague memory until you brought the name up again- thanks! We're definitely going to be cruising all around the island. Even though we'll be staying in Kona we will be all over the place. We like to get out and about.

I think we might have to do the whale watching. The last time I was there I saw a whale waaaay out on the horizon breech as I was watching the sunset from the hotel. Very cool!

Thanks again!

Since you will be in Kona, send me a PM if you would like to come up mauka and see some palms in the forest - less than 15 mins from town. We can exchange phone numbers and go from there.
