Quantity tends to highlight the obsessive nature of a palm lover. I only want to know the quantity of cultivated palms, not native palms that happen to be growing on your property.

My number is one hundred thirty-two (132), and increasing.

I've only started.

The top part, near the house is thickly planted.

The bottom, downhill, not so much.

I figure, an easy 12 to 15 hundred plants, no problem.

Plus the chainsaw to amend errors . . . .

I'll chime in...

On my way-over-planted single-home residential lot (less than 1/4 acre), I have 76 different species. Counting all clustering palms as ONE palm, and not counting potted palms, seedlings, or those on the brink of death....I have 183+ (I probably missed a few) palms in the ground. This keeps me busy enough...but, I still have room for more.

262 different spp. of palms in the ground so far in PR, many are small, but some are huge and fruiting. Most have aluminum labels to help me learn. About 355 individual inventoried palms that are named and more that are native on about 7 acres. Not sure how many hardy ones are in our 3/4 acre yard in zone 8 in Virginia. Those are all my husband's and none have labels. I can visualize 7. I need to walk around and count, but it's getting dark.

Not really worth looking at right now; though, the palms do show up well with brown all around. Also, most everything I have is tiny. The biggest I have is a nice young Butia odorata with very graceful, stretched fronds due to some shading. Next biggest is my Jub. It really poked along for the first two years it was in the ground. This fall it has finally started to get going a bit. My hybrids will be the first palms with some size to them. I have five or so of those in the ground. Plenty of Sabal minors. Give me 10 years to grow some of this to some size.

I have posted some pics of my plants (90% in pots) and will post more pics as the planting project takes off this spring but what about everyone that posted a response here. I'm sure we all would enjoy seeing some yard pics of some of the many palms planted in the ground. So.......... let's see some pics of your palms.

Posted

At the moment I can only give a guestimate. Palms with trunks over 3 metres, at least 150. Trunks from 0.5 to 3 metres, over 100. Less than 0.5 metres down to seedlings, several thousand.

Clumping palms are counted as one per clump. Managed to reduce my potted palms down to about 6.
