Wallichia disticha, fruiting at 8 years

One of my favourite fan palms is Wallichia disticha. However, I was alarmed to see my two best specimens fruiting at just 8 years. Is this normal? I presumed that like Corypha, it would take many years for the palm to mature, fruit and die

David, That is quick, but ours is only a little older and flowering for the second year running. It will be a good few years before its last flowering so you still have a while to enjoy it.Wallichias are spectacular in flower especially Densiflora which i posted a little back in "wallichia densifloras alien flower, the advantage Densiflora has is that is a clumper, so only that stem will eventually die while stems grow.

I read Wallichia are short-lived palms - maybe 10-15 years.

Wallichia is not a fan palm... This species' life span is dependant on how well it is doing. A very healthy one will live fast and die young, where one that takes longer to establish will live much longer...

They are quick, our 2 flowering specimens are only about 10-11 years old when they started.
