I was at work yesterday and saw a pallet with five Dypsis Decipians just shipped in from Hawaii. Yes I know, not rare anymore, but these were in 20 gallon containers and larger than anything you will ever see for sale in San Diego. Leaved are four to five feet and the base is about five inches diameter, absolutely stunning plants. Save yourself five years of hard growth and spend the 375.00 I think these will be selling for. I bought most of my Decipians for 250.00 five to seven years ago and they were the typical puny 15 gallon plants everyone sells so I guess timing is everything.

Second, there are about a half dozen nice 10 gallon Licuala Elegans, biggest ones I know of in So Cal. No price yet but one of them will be mine for sure.

Come on down and see me on Saturday.

I'm not sure if it's faster grower in California. I can say this for sure, Dypsis Decipians is a great grower here and it thrives in our cooler climate where it is not subjected to the drenching rains that is found in the tropics. But the year around warmth in Hawaii is perfect for growing them up to size outdoors quickly in pots where the drainage can be controlled. Growing palms in greenhouses is definately inferior to growing palms outdoors in Hawaii.

I will tell you this Bo, Every trunking Dypsis Decipians I have seen in California looks way beefier and more robust than anything I have seen in real tropical climates. Dypsis Deans in Leucadia is just trunking and it's an absolute monster, the six or seven trunking specimens in Ho' Omalahiuea Botanical Gardens in Oahu are just wimps in comparison, so I definately think longterm that they are better off in a drier climate.

Gary,

Yes, I know... I was just being facetious! Actually, I don't know of any D. decipiens here in Hawaii that have been grown to maturity under ideal, or near ideal, conditions.

I don't know if you're right or wrong, but personally I believe it'll be a stronger grower here in Hawaii than in SoCal, even in a wet area, given the right conditions. And one key condition I think is good drainage, which as we discussed in that other thread, is probably very inferior for the Ho'omaluhia individuals.

We should know in another ten years, or maybe even less if my Dypsis decipiens palms live up to what I expect of them....

Interestingly, D. decipiens' natural habitat is Central Madagascar, which is right around 18-20 degrees South - equivalent to Hawaii, which is 18-20 degrees North. And yes, I know they grow at altitude, so that does make a difference obviously, but still!

Since we don't know if our old pics will ever come back, I'll repost this one. I'm interested to see how my DD will do here in Kona at 2200 ft elevation and not so wet. It should be closer to it's native habitat than either Cal. or lower elevation tropics.

This palm's in California, and that's my 25 year old son Dorian for scale.

Kathy,

That palm was purchased from Bo as a 15 Gal when he moved to Hawaii. He will correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that was in 1992. He doesn't know how old it was then, but probably around 8. So about 22 years old.

Dean,

Well, almost! I'm sure it had to be in 1994, though, because it was early that year I made the Hawaii decision. And prior to that I was in a buying mode (in SoCal). Which after the Hawaii decision, overnight, became a selling mode.... So, the palm in your photo may actually be somewhat younger, maybe 20 at this time?

Now i am worried. I think i planted mine too close to other stuff. And since then -it was a double - it became a triple....
