this year it seems like theres a ton of palms that are very slow to open spears. ive seen kings, c.macrocarpa, dypsis onilahensis, dypsis decaryi, dypsis albofarinosa, foxtail and now this phoenix. why are they doing this? i was up at bill (multiflora) and he has 2 dypsis and this phoenix doing it and he doesnt know why but he said he has been hearing a bunch of people saying the same thing. i dont think its lack of water becasue my father in law has a c macrocarpa that has 2 spears and a 1/3 open leaf on it and he floods the crap out of that thing. what else could it be and is it only a so cal thing....

I have a foxtail doing the same, two unopened spears. Though others are doing well.

Some of my spears were slow too. I Ensured it was watered and fertilized well.

Maybe it is a lack of sustained heat?

I think its rotting roots when they look like that phoenix.

I have an arch. cunninghamiana with 3 unopened spears...

It has tons of water... (i have it in the ground from the last 2 months)

In my case, this was the only palm doing this, but it had enough water and heat, so it must have been any other reason. Also, no signs of rotting roots.

And now, colder nights coming, i hope these spears wait until spring to open.

when accumulated several spears end up unopened and not open as they should is a bad sign.

I have a Ravenea hildebrandtii that has an unopened spear and one growing up, behind it. I think mine is a ph shock issue and I hope it will eventually pull out of it...

I suppose better a slow spear than a prematurely opening one. My hyphanae spears both opened when tiny and the poor thing died shortly thereafter.
