Unusual Palm Trees at Fairchild!

Hello everyone! I am one of Miami's newest residents. Here are some photos I took on Wednesday at Fairchild. This month they have free Wednesday admission, so I will be there tomorrow morning for sure! I decided to take pictures of the more uncommon palms, since they deserve equal attention. I can't believe I finally live in a place where coconuts can grow.

Thanks for the photos! I'm waiting for the heat to break a little before I make my semi-yearly trek to Fairchild. That P eckmanii has actually grown a bit since last year.

What a great Post. Everytime I am at Fairchild, I am so constantly bedazzled that I do not have time or wits to look for those truly rare and out of the ordinary specimens.I see them in Rifle and Craft and swear I will search them out but it is always a pipe dream. A good pipe dream but a dream out of the pipe, nonetheless.

Thanks for the compliments! As I said, I went back to Fairchild. Here are a few more photos. I read the website incorrectly, and it's only free the first Wednesday of the next couple months, but fortunately the lady let me and a friend in for free.

My first Floridian Coconut! My friend was able to break it open. It wasn't sweet, but it was edible! It was a Golden Malay Dwarf Variety... Sorry Fairchild for taking a Coconut.

Attalea funifera.... This is definitely a funky looking palm. At least at this stage, it doesn't look quite like the other Attaleas! It's about 10 feet tall.

A Ptychosperma caryotoides blended into a Caryota mitis

I took this picture yesterday of a Chuniophoenix hainanensis fruit, but I had photographed it back in March when it was just a flower!

This is a good idea. However, I was just at Fairchild yesterday admiring their C. fallaensis and I can say without hesitation that I have seen larger bismarckias here in south Florida. I posted a couple photos that I took yesterday on another thread in case you might be interested (no overall shot, though):

Great photos. I was at Fairchild two weeks before hurricane Andrew hit and exactly one year later. The change was shocking. It looks terrific from your photos. Did you get any pics of the Copernecia baileyana down in the lower area around one of the lakes? They were so impressive to me as were the mammoth spider webs that went from tree to tree: a bug's nightmare, for sure.

Not quite right Kyle, the Latania verschaffeltii is the yellow and Latania loddigesii is the blue.
