In November 2011, I began a backyard makeover! What a long journey it was. The building of the swimming took eight months due to problems with the contractor and the delays with heavy rains.

But in the end it was built just in time for summer. I planned out the project over two years ago doing research and bidding out the work. I got to enjoy the fruits of the labor! I planted a lot of different palms to give the backyard a tropical vibe. These are my before and after pictures. Thanks to all the PalmTalk members for giving me input on the landscaping.

Heavy rain delayed the project for several weeks. The dirt collapsed and lost two palms.

The pool and garden maintenance will be all handled by me. The palms all are watered with a drip system. The pool size is 16' wide by 40' long and the water is a salt water system. Thanks everyone for your kind words and I will keep you posted with the palms I am planting. Yes I did loose a lot of palm planting space BUT I gained a lot of entertainment space that my wife and kids all love! It may not make a lot of sense to put a pool in when I live down the street from the beach BUT when the wife is happy everyone is happy in my house hold!

Oooooo, the whole family will certainly enjoy such transformation. Congratulations! The palms add a final and indispensable tropical touch!!

I know my parent's pool gets a lot of splashing from time to time--sometimes that water overflows and waters the palms around the pool patio. Most palms cannot uptake nutrients with salt in their soil; Let's hope this doesn't happen to you with your choice to have a saltwater pool...

Dad--"STOP THAT SPLASHING, KIDS!!!!"

Everything looks great!

...but...if you love your palms, take out that giant bird of paradise behind the pool, and stick it in a giant decorative pot.

Yea I yell at my kids from over splashing. So far nothing looks like it got hurt from the pool water. I have 3" of mulch over the dirt to help slow the process down. The pool man said the salt level is lightly higher than our drinking level, but is converted by the Chlorinator machine into Chlorine so breaks down the salt even more.

Tom turned out very nice, not to worry about salt water from pool has not hurt my palms at all, hope all grows well for you.

Tom, the backyard looks great. I love that pool and the Gunite was a great choice. I guess everyone uses Gunite now days. If not, they should. The palms truly accents the pool! Again, GREAT JOB!

Well I rather would make a pond with nice lotuses and waterlilies, and one you can swim in. They make them here, swimming between the waterlilies and frogs is much nicer then a steril blue pool!

Well I like it natural anyway!
