Good day palm people.

I just purchased a few palms on the weekend and the guy there mentioned using a plant sunscreen for the palms that have been grown under shadecloth until they are sun hardy. Have you guys heard of this and do you know if it's for sale in Aus?

ps, photos to follow of new plantings

Some of the anti-transpirant type sprays can be used to reduce the effects of hot non-humid heat on palms and thus reduce the effects of sunburn.....I haven't ever used any of them, I just chuck em out there and let them harden themselves.

Sun hardening only takes a few weeks anyhow. I just put them where they get early morning sun, then move them a bit a week later so they get more and more. Also you can start by putting them into dappled shade and gradually increase the amount of sun weekly.

Napalm

Personally i don't believe in that stuff . Its easier and cheaper overall to get 4 tall garden stakes ,hammer them around the palm and tack some 30 % shade cloth over the 4 poles using shadecloth cleats . Leave this on for 1 summer and the palm will get used to the sun without burning. I have done this with Hedyscepe and Rhopalostylis with good results.
