Alberto,

What altitude is that? If the water temp is close to 10C in summer, what is it like in winter? A mass of cold water like that should produce a pretty cool-humid microclimate. Does this palm handle cool conditions as well as Archontophoenix cunninghamiana, or does it need warmer average temperatures?

Beautiful palm in beautiful location!

The water comes from the peaks at 2.787m. altitude (with alpine vegetation)

In the winter it snows on the tops.

Some years ago I went to the top (highest road of Brazil +- 2000m )

This time we stayed at the lower part of the Park at +- 900m

The climate at this altitude is fresh and humid.

Thanks for the pictures Alberto. This is one of my favorite places and unfortunately I have not been back there for a long time. When I lived in São Paulo I went there with a certain frequency. Although at the time I did not pay much attention to palms. I used to go to Visconde de Maua and stay in a real nice pousada there with a view of the mountains. The whole region of the Mantiqueira is a beautiful region.

Mike, your juçara (pronunciation: joossara )is superb! It already shows the mature drooping leaves. How old is it? It should begin to produce fruits by now....

Don,the Itatiaia is magic place with the fourth highest peak of Brazil. I also like it very much.

The first time we went to the top,we walked to the´´Prateleiras´´. My dream is to make the ´´escalaminhada´´ to the Pico das agulhas Negras

Great pics of a great palm. I have one in my garden that has seen a low of about 29f with no effect, and a very long cold winter the previous year with no problem. I need to try more of these!

Alberto,

I have always wanted to go to the peak as well. Who knows, maybe some day. I also want to get to Pico da Neblina, the highest mountain in Brazil which is here in Amazonas. But, that is not an easy task since there are no roads. I remember seeing some giant jabuticaba trees on the road to Minas through the mountains. It is a beautiful place.
