So first let me apologize for the pic quality. I tried a few too many times to get a good quality macro-pic - but I'm not Ryan....official photog of all that is....well palmy & crotonish in nature.

At the end of the day - it all boils down to the quality of your equipment (no snarkiness necessary).

So I was grilling out in the back yard tonight when I saw what I thought was a giant bee land directly behind youngster #1. Since Y. #1 was holding the meat about to go on the bar-b - I did not want to alarm her. She handed me the chops and I walked around behind her to notice a gnarly looking beetle that had landed directly behind her. Assured that youngin #1 was not in imminent danger of getting a ghastly and painfully inflicted sting/wound, I calmly squashed the said flying monstrosity with my mass and proceeded to start burning the meat.

I brought the squashed exoskeleton inside to attempt to get some pics for a positive ID. All I ended up with was this blurry - yet somewhat discernable??? pic.

My brief bout with research yielded that this is a 'native' weevil to FL and that it has similar taste to it's rouge-colored cousin that's reeking havoc in CA. Also found that it's near impossible to detect an infestation.

Could anyone with experience in FL please weigh in on how unfortunate it was having one land in my back yard tonight? I saw that they ?? swarm ?? from spring-fall.

Looks like that might be a Palmetto weevil.

They come in many color phases.

While panic is understandable, I think caution is better advised.
