Santa Monica's mass planting of Roystonea all along Ocean Avenue about 1 year ago is now producing the results I would have predicted. The only specimens that are looking okay are those that happen to have some protection from the wind as a result of large shade trees blocking the winds coming from the beach. I think people focus too much on temperature and forget about how much effect wind has on royal palms in a non-humid climate like SoCal. I would have advised the city of Santa Monica not to plant any royal palms where there wasn't a building or some large trees to block them from the drying effects of the wind. Oh well, they'll either take the ill-faring specimens out and replace them with other species or we'll end up with some very sad-looking adult royal palms along the street there that will then be much more costly to remove (actually, it appears that they already have removed a number of them and replaced them with foxtail palms).

Why not live in the tropics?

There are a few healthy ones at the entrance to the bus depot on Olympic. The foxy ladies on Ocean arent looking so hot, I am wondering if they are just acclimating or if they were also a bad decision. The Foxtails seem to love it (just a couple of them on Ocean and Santa Monica (I think its SM)).

Actually as of March 28, 2019 the Roystonea Palms at Palisades Park are looking healthy and quite good. Not sure what they did to them, but it is a VAST improvement!!
