Howdyall:

Larry's post about royal growth rate at his place caused me to review my Royals, and well, the growth rate varies, sometimes a lot, based on particular growing conditions.

In the fall of 2004, I bought three baby royals in 10" post from Home  Despot.  All were about two feet tall, with about an inch of caliper at the base more or less.

Below is Spanky, the one in the middle, growth rate wise:

Butch is huge; about twice as tall as Alfalfa, half again as tall as Spanky.  Right on a south facing wall, plenty of water, and plenty of the infamous Miller Yellow Water treatment . . . .:P

when you did the 2007 update and it still wasn't trunking i was going to say that it's not near as quick as i expected for 10 years growth but good thing i looked at the dates of your posts. that's insane growth for 10 years, i have 2 regia that are about the size you purchased yours and after seeing these photos and seeing some of these beasts in person i will forgo planting them in my small garden.

They're NOT for a small LOT.

Might want to consider borenquenia or princeps, they're a lot smaller, though not small.

Curvy too. Maybe you should change its name to Marilyn (ah lah Marilyn Monroe).

Land O Lakes FL, a suburb on the North Side of Tampa, FL

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

I am a Kayaker, Hiker, Bicyclist, and amateur Photographer that loves the outdoors.

The one with the paper bag was the R. oleracea that died. Or at least that what they called it at Floribunda, and what the yellowing in winter told me.

I can hardly wait till Butch gets some serious height.
