hey guys , this is my first post to this site. i hope to get much info and learn from the pros here.

as you can see i just planted this 30 ft Silver Queen, roughly 3-4 weeks ago. now the colors are deep green and seem healthy, but the new shoot is very odd looking to me, it has a long shoot and at the very end its opened. kinda like a flag pole with the flag at top. there a several, and not pushing out, what does this mean?

i have added palm fertilzer blend, additional minor elements, additional Liquied palm nutrition(maganese, magnesium, iron, sulfer), and maganese granular.

also, the soil seams rather heavy and wet, kinda mucky, i addeds some beach sand around it, but maybe need Peat or topsoil ?

thanks

here is pick of palm, and you can see what im referring too in the center

Diggermon,

Welcome to PalmTalk and please take full advantage of all its features! The expertise found here is quite remarkable and you will not be disappointed. Your Syagrus romanzoffiana (Queen Palm) looks fine - including the unopened new frond. With the palm being a recent transplant - there is a bit of transplant shock that palms go through from having their food supply cut off and shoved into new surroundings. Keep the palm adequately watered (don't let dry out too much) and let the new roots sprawl. Please let us know the soil conditions the palm is planted in - so that advice can be tailored as such (clay, sand, PH level...etc.).

Please keep the pictures of your garden coming and best of luck with this and all your palms.

Good Luck!

Rich

Hi Diggman, welcome!!!! :)

Your palm looks great. That spear with the few leaflets at the top is normal for an opening spear. Having multiple spears is a good thing. That's means the palm is healthy and pushing lots of leaves.

thanks for the kind words guys.

JC in the OC,- yes they are attatched with nails. but dont worry there not nailed into the trunk, theyre nailed through the dead ears that need to be pulled off. Im gladd i have the supports because right now as i speak its blowing 40-50 mph down here on the gulf coast. Ill probably just leave them on through hurricane season this year

So that is normal for it to look like that? there is one that has opened just before that middle shoot, and its kinda laid over like it didnt fully shoot out, you can barely see it in the pic.

fyi, down here we have blistering summers, and freezing winters, most people i know lost all there Queen palms last 2 years, so well see how it goes.

i think my soil is actually too wet, like clay muck type stuff, it is really heavy and thick. i added some Gypsom to help break it down, but thinkin of adding all new soil about 6-8" down.

what would be a prime soil mix for large palms like this? i was thinking beach sand, peat, top, vermiculite?

anyone, i would really like to get these issues resolved

Your queen looks fine to me. It was just transplanted so Im not shocked that the first few leaves may not look perfect but as long as it is well taken care of it should do well (hopefully surviving your winters). From my understanding queens do fairly well in heavy soils and you might be causing more problems by trying to change the soil. In fact, when queens do poorly in Florida it tends to be in really poor soils. Good luck!

I suspect the new frond issue is nothing more than shock from being planted. Baby it, but don't kill it with kindness either.

And, as stated earlier, it needs to be braced properly. We are just over a month from hurricane season, and even established queen palms have a rotten reputation for going down in storms. Yours will need extra good bracing this year.

Hello Mike: welcome

Look at this link. There you can read everything about transplants and care for palms in their new place

I think that your Queen looks great and shows only the effects of transplantation

Be patient

thanks guys, i agree im just very, well im a perfectionist and i like everything to me just like it needs to be to thrive. i will fertilize again in a month probably, just keep it watered and see how it goes.

o yeah, also i have already cut out 2 massive 4 ft. seed pods, and another one is already growing out. the palm guy said that is a really good sign when they produce seed pods. is the true?

on another note, one of my Pheonix Sylvestris palms it really doing bad, i will start a new thread on that. Really thats the palm with my most concern. ill have pics as well to show.

thanks
