I took some pics of my palms. In the Netherlands, the choice is much more restricted but a few palmspecies will survive the freezing temperatures easily. Some other need to be protected a little bit agains to much rain and snow.
The tropical ones...well what can I say. I can only dream of that or build a hugh heated greenhouse. But for that I need to win the lotery. I have some real tropical palms. I collect them but I have to beware of getting to much because I have limited space.
But the palms I prefer here are the hardy ones. The ones that can stand freezing temps.

I continue to be amazed that my own Trachycarpus is tolerating Florida's heat. I'm told that they reach about 2m in height before dying of fungus infections. If that's so, mine has a few years left.

Wow Esther, that is incredible! You have a full blown nursery!

So, do you sell internationally? Are you the palmiest person in Holland? Do you grow from seed and imported seedlings? How old are your oldest plants?

Hi Ken

Well the small ones I will sell to Germany Belgium and England. But not big ones.

I do sell the big ones on my island. Want to make it a tropical island...but also tourist buy them.

I grow from seed but only for fun. I have several Trachycarpus species germinated...I will grow them on my land.

Outside with no protection. Mother nature will deside which ones survives and these are very strong plants.

My oldest palm is in my own garden at my home dont know exacly the age but it is there for seven years now and it is a beauty. It is starting to flower for the first time.

But I do what i can with the palms and other plants. Im a mother of 2 kids too and I work as a accountant have to keep the house clean so....i do what i can with the palms and the other tropical plants..these things make me happy!

Well there are about 5 species or so wich can be grown in the Dutch climate.

Trachycarpus fortunei as number one.

Sabal minor

Rhapidophyllum hystrix

Chamaerops humillis close to the coast when planted at a warm sheltered microclimate.

Maybe also Trachycarpus takil.

And maybe a few more when the microclimate is warm enough.

Trachycarpus fortunei becomes a more common site the last years in my area.

And no , I do not grow tulips, I dont like them! But Cypripediums are a different matter, 3 in flower now. And they give a damne about cold winters.

And tulips are not native here either! But cultivated with a lot of chemicals, bad for the environement!

Esther:

Those are some really fantastic looking palms! Some of mine of the same species do not look that healthy, after two very cold winters.

Keep up the good work.

And Alexander, good for you about not growing tulips! They are much too fussy to grow, requiring much too much in the way of supplements. Fortunately, it is almost too warm to grow them here, so I don't have the temptation to try them.

Well the wild botanical tulips are nice, for a rockgarden, but those cultivated ones you get the first years flowers and then the following years mostely stupid leaves!

Well a much nicer bulb is Fritillaria meleagris or Leucojum aestivum. And those are native here although rare!

Esther has not only palm trees in her garden

Here are pictures, from my garden

Trachycarpus is now eight years in the ground and 17 degrees below zero survives

Well we need much more Trachycarpus fortunei in this country to make it look less boring. And thats a fact!

Con las palmas para la victoria!

You are on the island of Texel, I presume? I saw beautiful wild orchids on your island when I visited in May, ten years ago. Lots of beautiful birds, too. We had a good lunch there on our bird-watching trip. With a Dutch surname, I was pleased to visit the country of my ancestor Dewees from long ago (1680). In Haarlem I saw Ceanothus thyrsiflorus planted in gardens -- a plant that is native to my own city, San Francisco! The only palms I saw were in Amsterdam's Hortus Botanicus.

The pink orchid flowering in May is probably Dathylorhiza majalis. One of the earliest orchids here. In Holland we get arround 45 species, moste are very rare.

On Texel you get very goodmeat of the local sheep. Its a special breed. It used to be exported to France, the Dutch used to get the inferior meat from sheep in New Zealand. Well get the good meat of Texel lam!

Dalmatino

on Texel we have miljons of orchids growing..the species that grow here are;

Dactylorhiza majalis, dact. maculata, Dact. incarnata, Epicpactus helleborine, Epioactis palustris,Liparis loeselii,

Orchis morio, Plathantera bifolia, Gymnadenia conopsea, Listera ovata these are the most common.

lots of orchids and lots of sheep, the meat is famous.

Even Gymnadenia conopsea, that one is very rare in the Netherlands. Well the wild orchid season is about to start any moment now.

Beautiful tulips, Esther. I have never seen one in real life, only seen them in photos and heard about them so yes, once again beautiful.

Peter, that Trachycarpus is a fast grower if it reached that height in eight years!
