The results are a little surprising. I know that Floriduh is really passe' for retirees, except for Canadians because of the strength of their dollar. But I thought you would have seen Tennessee, Texas and some other southern states. How about all those Lake-Front Lots that Eric Estrada was pushing a few years ago? What happened to them?

So many species,

so little time.

Coconut Creek, Florida

Urban Rainforest Palms,Cycads and Exotics. Were in San Diego Ca. about 5 miles from the beach on Tecolote canyon. It seems to be an ideal growing climate with moderate temps. and very little frost. Vacation Rental in Leilani Estates, big island Hi PM me if interested in staying there.

Retirement can be a complex equation.

Simpletons often don't get that . . . .

Bruce, I was gonna ask you the same thing :D . I'm ready to move a month ago from yesterday  . Worked on the house again ALL DAY today. Let me tell you I would much rather be planting palms and cycads this time of year. Were hoping to put it on the market around July. Anybody want to buy a rainforest in San Diego :hmm: ?

Thanks for your response. I realize Hawaii is tops for most folks, not just folks with Palm Fever! :D

Make it a great day!

Barrington's criteria were big on health. Hawaii has universal health care and healthy citizens who enjoy the outdoors.

Southern states tend to have large numbers of people with poor access to health care, and who are sedentary. Lots of diabetes. On top of that, crime rates tend to be high. That said, NC has some very attractive areas (and a superb state university system, for those who have kids). Beside, a state with a nursery like Plant Delights can't be all bad.

i have a hard time putting Louisiana ahead of NC.

New Hampshire has the nation's lowest homicide rate, but don't they have property taxes so high that a tax bill can cause heart seizure?

Delaware's always been well-run. I think the southern part of the state is replacing chicken-growing with retirees from Philadelphia and Washington. I recall salt-water mosquitoes and deer flies.

Oregon got a poor rating. The state once thrived on logging, some fishing, and industry around Portland. It's been struggling ever since, albeit with some good stuff in the Silicon Forest and the environs of Nike. You can get no-frills but effective health care from the likes of Kaiser-Permanente.

Fla. climate center: 100-119 days>85 F
USDA 1990 hardiness zone 9B
Current USDA hardiness zone 10a
4 km inland from Indian River; 27º N (equivalent to Brisbane)

Central Orlando's urban heat island may be warmer than us

Hmm.

This is an interesting subject.

California has more retirees than a whole flock of states combined.

In spite of the fact that it's not great to retire to from somewhere else.

But, if you've been here a long time, there are freebies galore, like rent control, and Proposition 13.

Oh, if you like to ski, I guess there's Idaho.

But, there's plenty of good doctors, too, cutting edge hospitals.

Not an easy equation, no sir. (Or ma'am)

ALASKA--I hear old men like to fish and hunt... That and there are very few people to add to their cantankerous mood

I just finished reading "Thrive" about the happiest places in the world. San Luis Obispo, California was the only place in the US on the list. Number 1 was the Nicoya Penisula in Costa Rica. Happiness was based on surveys of people and other factors. San Luis has all the things that make people happy. It is a very interesting place. It has no dive-through fast food restaurants. The main street is for pedestrians and bikes, no cars. It sounded really nice. The healthiest place in the US is Loma Linda, CA. People regulary live to be 100 and still be healthy and independent.

So I guess it depends on what you want.

And while Oregon got a poor rating, I would choose it over many of the other places. It has more green (as in environmental) ideas than most states and the people seem to enjoy the outdoors.

I wonder how many giggly retirees there are in Alaska or SLO, CA . . . .

(Couldn't resist . . . .)
