Lodoicea maldivica is pretty high up there for me.

Of course! How did I forget that one?!

Cocos nucifera would rank highly for many. If I could grow one, my choice might be this. I found one on sale at a market in Arequipa (Peru) last week. Total surprise! I think the stall holder had it transported in from the selva. He was asking 100 soles (35 USD). Too much, considering the fate it would meet here.

Yes I have to go with Cocos nucifera also...not the tallest or maybe even the prettiest; but it represents the tropics and is the quintessential palm more so than all other species put together. We as palm snobs may vote differently, but for the world as a whole...gotta be the coconut. Most have never even heard of C. rendi or Tahina, much less seen one in habitat; but most people have seen a coconut palm. (Plus it is what I wanted to grow as a little kid, but couldn't because of climate.)

Cocos are $10 annuals here as a 5-7 gallon. they look just fine through summer....

As far as the list, you have to put jubaea on it, probably why "other" is winning. Personally, I like a huge Copernicia Fallaensis as the king of palms. I do also like the jubaea, as 2nd.

Formerly in Gilbert AZ, zone 9a/9b. Now in Palmetto, Florida Zone 9b/10a??

It just occured to me that this is a very sexist poll, the "king" of palms. How about the QUEEN of palms????? That would be syagrus Romanzoffiana  !

Andrew, I fear you have opened a Pandora's box with this survey.

John, increase the price a bit more and I'll bring a coconut in person on the next flight to Spain.

I am surprised C renda has got so many votes? For me it is Corypha all the way. But the slow growth is a real problem.

No - it is an aggregation named for the Romans-of-Fiana who thought it could grow in Italy and ended up dividing the empire between into the parts where it would not grow (West) and where it could (East). Paul - you approve ?

Hard choice, but I think I should mention Areca catechu

  • Fragrant flowers
  • Beautiful fronds with the wide end leaves
  • Beatiful bamboo-like trunk and bright green crownshaft
  • Useful fruit (stimulative)
  • Very tropical-looking IMO
  • Fast growing

Too bad I can't really grow it here. I think it's worth a mention among Cocos and others...

You folks in the tropics probably think I'm dumb for mentioning a 'common' palm. :P

Actually it was named after a Russian nobleman named Romantsov (Романцов, old style transliteration - Romanzoff) who sponsored the expedition during which it was discovered in 1822. Originally named Cocos romanzoffiana. Nothing like paying your way into history and science books.rolleyes.gif

The Ultimate palm is one that your palm enthusiast neighbor has planted and is taking care of in your yard. Just like my self and others here have done for our neighbors.

the concept of an "ultimate palm" suggests that there is no stunning beauty in diversity of a planting. That would be like selecting the "worlds best song".... I actually think the way arrangements of palms work together is much more important. It will involve some artistic input and you will have to earn that the hard way. You will not be able to just buy it, or live in the right area. The better arrangements will have a lot of thought put into them and knowledge of the palm choices...

Ultimate = double coconut, Lodoicea maldivica

in my humble opinion that is...

I've seen these up close, I tried to steal one from Townsville, they are intoxicating.

Wal you are 100 % absolutely correct sir.

Look at my avatar.. Look at the size of that palm and note that it had over 30 double coconuts that probably weighed on average about 20 lbs or more !!! ( some were young ).

Think about the weight those puppies have to tow to stay upright ?!

That is impressive.

Hmm.

Awesomeness has many facets.

Seems like the list is mostly leaning towards the biggest.

So, to that end, I vote for Caryota gigas.

Mauritia flexuosa

That is my answer too. Here in the heart of Amazonia there is only one king and that is the Mauritia flexuosa, our buriti. Now the queen is Euterpe precatoria. And, since they frequently grow fairly close together they make a great couple.
