Dypsis Betafaka

Featured Replies

I have a one gallon D Betafaka that is quite vigorous and will probably plant out this spring. Is it a single trunk or multi. Can it handle full sun at the beach? Thanks for any advice good or bad.

Burt, since the temp at your place is rarely over 85F, i would give it some sun only because that will keep it warm..

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

It almost never exceeds 85, maybe a few days a year.Does it clump? I have very little info on this palm. It's not listed in POM. The roots are shooting out of the bottom, it seems to want more.

Won't clump but might divide like Decipiens is my guess - which it might be anyway. I put a 3 gallon plant in full sun here in Vista and it had no issue acclimating quickly.

I have one that I planted as a one gallon. It has been in the ground for almost two years and has been slow so far. It is in full sun and exposed to the weather. I had frost twice this year and it went unscathed. It just opened a new frond and the next spear is already pushing. It showing some nice color too. This photo was taken in February after a good rain. I'll try and post an updated photo this weekend.

In this photo you can see the betefaka through the freezer burnt fronds of my D. leptocheilos but the betefaka is still green.

Mike,

That looks a lot more like the palm I got as Dypsis 'honkona'. My 'betafaka' has finer, droopier leaflets and is growing more or less distichously. They're both good growers and hardy, and both may end up being forms of decipiens, so not a big difference.

Burt, I would put it into full sun.

I should have said full sun on the coast. Not as hot as Florida.

Matt,

I purchased it as betefaka from JD Anderson. I guess we'll have to wait twenty years to find out.

The D.sp. betafaka Jerry and Dan are selling are the real deal IMO. DEFINITELY not D.decipiens or a strain of decipiens. It is not as hardy as decipiens but a hardy Dypsis none the less.

I would put the 1 gal in full sun after 10 weeks of gradual acclimation.

I kinda agree with the above, but the two palms metioned above were VERY similar at a small size and could have gotten mixed up... as they get older, you can see the difference

The provenance of mine was Floribunda. Were it to turn out to be a D Decepiens that wouldn't be such a bad thing. There's no such thing as too much of a good thing
