if a palm gets rats why dont the owls fly around the palm and pick the suckers off ?

To answer your question, "yes", sort of.

Rodents are intellgent creatures, and they'll find a safe home in a spiny palm. Washies in particular that are never trimmed seem to draw their share of them.

I've never seen rats living in any other palm, though. You'd think they'ld love Phoenix, but I've not seen any rats in them in my time.

I think the owls do come and get them. Just not fast enough to eliminate them entirely. They can reproduce prodigiously.

Most other palms, like kings, don't really offer a happy home. There's not enough hiding places, and those that are there, don't have the armor of spines a washie has. (Maybe Phoenix are TOO spiny, and the rats get impaled . . . .?)

I had roof rats, not necessarily living in the crown of a particular palm, but in the canopy and roofs of the neighborhood - and jump from tree to tree. They completely hacked off every frond of a tall Howea at the petiole near the crown, and left it completely naked.

I have tons of rats in my CIDP. Sometimes you can hear them fighting. One night, there was a particularly noisy rat fight and a rat actually feel out of tree, landed a few feet away from me and ran off.

Not sure about rats, but one of my neighbors has a nice colony of bats in the their tall washies.

That's why I keep my Phoenix trimmed. I hate rats! I wage war on rats. I keep a special kind of trap in my barn so that they all die. I've been known to stomp on one to kill it. Did I mention I hate rats? I won't have traveler palms (I know it is not a palm) because the rats love them. I cut down 3 Washies because of rats.

Now, bats - that's a different story. I would love to have colonies of bats! Good animals - great for mosquito control.

Queen palm is paradise for rats. My friend work at a car dearlership and see hundred of rats falling out when the tree trimmer hack off the frond. He told me never buy a car near the queen palm because the rats usually chew on the wiring and other material in the car.

In Escondido, the city wrapped a foot long aluminum band around many of the queen palms to keep away the rats.

We had a jararaca (bothrops) snake in a Astrocaryum frond that jumped out as the frond was pulled off the tree a while ago. I have not seen any rats in the palms, but maybe the snakes keep them away. I am not too happy with having the snake there either.

Rats also like the African Oil Palm and I have had them nesting in them as well as Dypsis madagascarensis.
