King Kong! Caryota gigas . . ..

Featured Replies

Well, on a Presidents' day eve, got this silhouette of my giant C. gigas in my mind, had to take a picture, I couldn't stop myself.

Its base is a bit below the power pole; I estimate it to be about 55 feet tall.

Big.

And, still a baby.

The trunk.

Gadzooks, that's big, and remember: it's only about half, or one-third the size it gets in its native Thai mountains!

Hey Dave,

i think that standard only applies to high voltage transmission lines. I think regular distrubition lines can be much lower, maybe as low as 30 feet. My guess is that palm is somewhere between 35-40 feet. Magnificient, whatever the height! Truly an awesome palm! I need to take the tour sometime this spring/summer!

Ladies and gents, Caryota Gigas is no longer. This name has been updated and this palm is now known as Caryota Obtusa.

Cool palm and pole pics everyone. Now if they could only use Caryota to hang power lines on that would be perfect.

In Costa Rica, they have "living" fences--they take a gumbo limbo limb and burry it half way in the ground and then attach wire to it and the limb sprouts and grows, instead of using a fence post.

I've been thinking about doing that with Ficus, and trying to make a living bridge over my gully.

You can really get creative with the beard roots that ficus is known for; once they touch the ground, they become solid and would make nice bridge structure(in a decade), but with cool beards comes ficus roots--they don't stop for water pipes, sidewalks, or foundations!
