I just heard on our local NBC station that there was a 6.3 earthquake in New Zealand. The only thing they said was that buildings had collapsed and people were trapped. Saw film footage of billowing clouds of dust. Not seeing much yet on Google news other than it was 10 kilometers south-east of Christchurch and that Radio NZ was reporting extensive damage and the PM has urged residents to evacuate the city due to the possibility of more collapses. Has anyone heard anything else and do we have members in New Zealand around the Christchurch area? That such a pretty area of the country too. Seems like disasters are coming in multiples to some areas of the world. They just had a 7.1 in the fall.

Just came from reading some of the accounts from people nearby Christchurch and looking through some of the photos and videos on this site from The New Zealand Herald. Lots of structural damage. I feel for these people. Reminds me of scenes from the Loma Prieta quake in many ways.

I saw someone from Invercargill posted a response and am pretty sure I remember one of our Aussie members being from there. Hope if he has relatives there everyone is okay. I know we have some members from Auckland but assume they didn't feel anything.

Death toll will top 100, just saw live shots of bodies lined up, still 200 odd people believed to be inside collapsed buildings, water, phones, and power in very short supply, thousands in shelters.

Invercargill is a long way from Christchurch, even though they may have felt the quake, there will be no real damage. As for Auckland, we are a real long way away up here, over 1000km so nothing felt here.

Devastating scenes playing non-stop on TV here. The 2 major channels have been running coverage non-stop for the last 9 hours... things are going to be very grim for the people of Christchurch tomorrow. Our thoughts are with them all.

Michael.

I thought I remember someone here from Christchurch??

Chester something wasn't it? Anyway, there is no power down there in many areas so doubt we shall hear from him. There have been several hundred after shocks since the first big quake in September, some of them quite sizeable. Must be hell on the nerves. At least with a cyclone you have an end point, who knows how long the shocks could continue...

If you look at Tuesday 22/02/11 it's almost like the day started off with a lot less earthquakes than normal, like the pressure was building and nothing was releasing with small quakes, then the big ones all hit at once.

This link: http://www.christchurchquakemap.co.nz/ shows in order, all the quakes that have hit Christchurch since the first one on September the 4th last year... man its a lot.

This must be the earthquake center of the world.

TheNew York Times has a map showing the degree of shaking. The worst shaking was precisely in central Canterbury, the worst possible place. Shaking became less severe just a short distance away.

Shaking during the Christchurch quake is possibly the strongest ever recorded, nearly 2 times gravity (2G). "As recently as the 1980s, seismologists had believed that earthquakes couldn't generally produce ground accelerations greater than about 0.5G." Los Angeles Times
