Verschaffeltia splendida

I walked by one of my V. splendida yesterday and noticed it had a new pink leaf.

It got me thinking about how much this palm has grown over the last year.

The fronds are getting ready to go more pinnate and it will lose this entire-leaf look soon.

A little more than 9 months later and it has doubled in size

and has a few rings of trunk at the bottom.

Simply stunning Jeff. There mustn't be much wind about for the leaves to be so intact.

Nice growth Jeff. Here are a few growing at Ho`omaluhia Botanical Garden in Hawaii. Pic just taken January 7, 2011.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Brod, we get very little wind here although we did have a freak storm in June that caused a lot of wind damage.

Most of the time we only get some light breezes off the ocean. Even the banana leaves are usually intact and the leaves rarely split or shred.

Ari, glad to hear your V. splendida are finally showing some color!

Al, thanks for the photo. Here's one of you from the Biennial in Costa Rica almost three years ago.

Beautiful Jeff and looks like you've got it in a very well protected spot. I was surprised how fast they grow

and the salmon color of the new leaf. Here's a pic of a couple of mine, one was planted 2 years ago from a 5 gal.

and the small one is a year old from a 1 gal.

Also, I can't believe you got over 300 inches of rain last year, holy moly that's more than twice what we got. Those must

be some clean monkeys swinging around your place. Hope all is well.
