Ponce de Leon Hotel - 1905

This photo is of clientele relaxing in the courtyard of said hotel in St. Augustine, FL. What kills me about old photos of Florida life is how those people survived our climate in long sleeves, coats/ties, floor length skirts, hats year round. Does that sound relaxing to you? Also note the neat fountain and agaves.

Directly in-line with the fountain in the shrubbery? I can definitely see the C. macrog resemblance.

Indeed it is Jerry. I went there for spring break '93 with a friend that had attended there his frosh year and transferred back up north thereafter. Quite a quaint campus and from what I can remember  - quite a nice area. Not your prototypical spring break party locale - but good times none the less.

Great old photo. I am an alum of Flagler College from back in the 1970s. It is a beautiful campus the courtyard is still nice but not as full of plants.

Remember, they mostly came down in the winter time. The summer climate in FL was considered intolerable. Aand the climate in those days was a bit cooler, along with no heat island effects as well.

There is a Rhapidophyllum hystrix in a pot in the very front and there is another one far on the left.

I went to school there in the late 70's, definitely not your normal college. Good school, and the dorm rooms were old hotel rooms with really high ceilings etc. There was a male wing and a female wing and no visitation between the sexes in the rooms. I remember some cold winters-once it snowed in Miami it was so cold. There were only 3 bars in St. Aug and we knew them well...

I believe the Ponce de Leon Hotel was only open from November to Easter each season.

Here is a post card from 1905...the hotel was the first commercial structure to be hard wired for electricity in Florida.

The weight of lies will bring you down / And follow you to every town / Cause nothin happens here

That doesn't happen there / So when you run make sure you run / To something and not away from

Cause lies don't need an aero plane / To chase you anywhere

I've often wondered the same, Meg. Why would anyone want to wear such heavy, thick clothing on such a hot day? Seemed to be a sign of the times. There are old summer photos of my area and the clothes are the same. Thank goodness times have changed!

Actually, the men look fairly comfortable. The women, on the other hand, not so much.

And also, as I said earlier, the climate then was not like the climate now.

Florida is still Florida. Women dressed like that never look comfortable. And their skirts drag the ground in those old photos - even on unpaved streets. Ick, ick, ick.

I researched those "alligator border" postcards. Some of them were most politically incorrect but all of them incredibly expensive - try $100, $150 and up. I guess my taste surpasses my budget.
