Third serious attempt here, after a 35 years long career, spontaneously finished 4 days ago... No nicotine gum this time. Breathing feels great at the moment but what to do with this melancholic mood...ooohhhh, I almost tried to bite the young Chamaedorea seedlings a while ago...

I never started.

But my Dad stopped, then relapsed briefly a few years later.

My Mom stopped cold turkey, but I can't remember if an early stroke brought it on....

She asked me later "Did I smell like that"? And I said what?

"A smoker, I can smell them". I told her that she wore a lot of perfume so it wasn't noticable. She then said if she knew she smelled like that she would have quit a long time before... I never thought to try that to get her to stop!! :hmm:

Anyway, she told me the only time she missed it was the "reward time"....in other words after completing some decent task... to pause and reflect I guess. But that goes away I think.

Small weight gain is normal too, but can come back down later.

Good Luck!!

I quit cold turkey after turkey on Thanksgiving about 20 years ago. I decided the day & time weeks in advance to psych myself up. It was far easier than I thought. Keeping my hands busy was the toughest part. Good luck, Gileno :D

Good luck Gileno. I quit smoking about 4 years ago and I'm so glad that I did. Do whatever it takes to get over that short urge when you strongly crave that smoke. Run, yell, do pushups, whatever; it passes quickly.

Gileno,

Congratulations! I heard cigarettes are among the hardest things to give up. Some say even harder than other hard-core drugs.

I wish you all the very best.

Good luck, Gileno. I never started either so I can't offer any nitty-gritty advice. But I suggest you set aside the cost of each pack you no longer smoke, then when you've kicked the habit treat yourself to a fantastic palm of your choice.

My dad quit cold turkey after 50+ years. He coughed so hard one day he passed out in the bathroom. When he recovered he never smoked again. He always had 4 packs on the dash of his truck after that but never smoked again. He smoked 2-3 packs a day. Mom said he was tough to live with a couple of weeks.

Good luck, Gileno! You can do it!

Giving up booze was easier. I still like my smokes, it's the only vice I still have.

This is the way Meg. Assign the cost of ciggies to something else. I did when i gave up. I made it a goal to save the money towards holiday trips including and I am honest here, including the cost towards our very first ratpack trip to Darwin and beyond. It worked. Try that Gileno, save the amount towards a palm expedition. Other than that, I went cold turkey too, it's a pain for all including those near you but it works best.

Happy Gardening

I quite smoking in May of 1985 and have never had so much as one puff on a cigarette since then. My wife quite smoking about six months after I did. We don't allow smoking in our home, car, etc., by guests. We are now both sensitive to cigarette odor, and can hardly stand the stink that permeates almost everything (clothes, drapes, furniture, etc.).

I quit smoking for basically two reasons: One, for health considerations. And two, two years before I quit smoking the federal government levied an 8 cents per pack tax, which they said would rescind in two years. Well, two years came and went and the liars didn't rescind the tax -- because they enjoyed wastefully spending that extra revenue.

Well, the fiscal conservative that I am, I told the federal government they could cram their 8 cents additional tax, along with the basic tax on cigarettes, that they would not get a red Yankee cent from me again -- and I quit smoking cold turkey.

Today, considering the outrageous federal, state, and local taxes on a pack of cigarettes, I believe only fools and nicotine addicts would pay it (although I agree with their right to do so). In some states a pack of smokes is over $8.00/pack. I find this totally ludicrous and outrageous!

When I started smoking back in the early 1960s one could buy a pack of smokes for .25-.30 cents, depending on brand, filtered, non-filtered, etc. The afore costs, even adjusted for inflation wouldn't come close to $8.00/pack that is being charged now.

If I had a wish, I would wish that all smokers would stop smoking at once -- then watch the government howl and cry the blues due to the loss of cigarette taxes!
