I had never seen a variegated serenoa repens before today. I was on the hunt for striped Sabals, but this was even better!post-727-066595600 1290813489_thumb.jpgpost-727-087535300 1290813519_thumb.jpg

It's mine to admire, but it can't be moved. You can be sure I'll harvest seeds and give those a try.

Does verigation typically pass through to a second generation via seeds? I'd be very impressed if it does.

Sometimes you can get a small percentage from seed. It is worth trying.

Although variable in all circumstances, it largely depends on whether or not the mutation is genetic, chimeric, or viral.......

My knowledge if limited, but it would seem that genetic would be the most stable, chimeric to a lesser extent, and viral generally through stem propagation unless it's mitochondrial...

Keep us informed. Hopefully it's genetic and not viral. I had a Trachyarpus Latisectus that had amazing verigation, but it reverted..bleah. Im gonna watch when it sets seeds now though.

I don't think it could be genetic. It can happen, I'm thinking viral - this pic shows one of the two striated Sabal seedlings that came up from seeds from a similarly striated treepost-727-043187400 1290837384_thumb.jpg. On the Serenoa, the small branch that's on the same stem has all green leaves.

That is a beauty and probably quite rare for Serenoa. Are variegated Wodyetia bifurcata common?

I have seen a few recently planted in my area, one a large field grown with several feet of wood. Variegated veitchia too.

Great looking find Catherine  That is truly something special. Best wishes on success with any seed!

Woah! Excellent find. I've never heard of variegated Sereona before, it's good to know that they exist.

Also, the variegated sabal seedling is very nice, how many seeds did you germinate from the mother plant before you got one that had the trait?

Keith, two seedlings out of around 1400/1500 seeds. I still have all the other (green) seedlings and, three years later, no others have shown color. Those two were striated right from the first leaf. It's certainly worth a few minutes of my time to see if it just might work with the serenoa.

I had to add this photo. I like the way the striation of the petiole becomes the yellow of the leaf. There is so much art in nature!

Rusty was right.. I was away for Thanksgiving and neglected to stumble upon this wonderful post! Great find Creekside!! I've looked through 10,000's of potted serenoa and have yet to find a variegated one. I would be VERY interested in getting seed from you if you ever get some.

William,

Yes, we have 2 variegated W. bifurcata. They are extremely rare.
