Coconuts felled for Obama's visit to Mumbai

Featured Replies

My newspaper reports today that many trees including a whole line of juvenile coconuts planted recently along a stretch of road that is by the sea in the business district of Mumbai have been cut down to beautify the city ahead of Barack Obama's, (president of the U.S.A.), visit.

It seems they were guilty of "not growing" and are to be replaced with date palms.

I pass that stretch often and have seen the coconuts - not very pretty due to the effect of fronds being pruned for transportation but they were certainly not dieseased or unhealthy. Considering that the unfortunate juveniles were planted less than a year ago I don't know how much growth they were expected to show to avoid the axe. I hope the date palms do better.

uuuuuuuuhhhhhh, I could comment, but won't.

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I do some experiments and learning in my garden with palms so you don't have to experience the pain! Look at my old threads to find various observations and tips!

It doesn't look very good, but reading how the trees were not growing, it might have been a case of, "whilst we're at it..". The press will demonize anyone they can. I think the real crime though, is the lack of respect shown to the Tree Authority. The BMC obviously took it upon themselves to "pull rank" given the status of the forthcoming visit. Human weevils were responsible.

What a waste.

Whatever the reasoning it seems a bad decision to plant anything in a public place that will be hazardous to the public.

Falling coconuts are dangerous and damage vehicles and can kill humans. Date palm fronds have been known to cause eye damage and loss.

They should chose a species that is not likely to cause any damage at all.

Located on Vanua Levu near Savusavu (16degrees South) Elevation from sealevel to 30meters with average annual rainfall of 2800mm (110in) with temperature from 18 to 34C (65 to 92F).

Well for an urban area there are much better palms then ordinary coconut trees! I would plant Roystonea oleracea, ?Bismarckia nobilis or what to say from Corypha umbraculifera!

Forget silly coconuts, they belong along the beach or in the countryside!
