Took a hike with a friend today near the Big Bend Gulf Coast here in North FL. We were on a mission to visit the Cathedral of Palms. It is one of the largest last standing virgin Palm Hammocks of the S. palmetto. Located in the St Marks Wildlife Refuge on the Florida trail.

is is right on the bay and the breeze comes through all the fronds.its a wonderful mystical place. Pictures cannot capture it but I will try and post some findings

I ended up finding 4 variegated Sabal palmettos one of which has a beautiful curved trunk with moss!

the trail passes by Shepards Spring, I am sure the Indians and many native people used this fresh water source. Reported to be 80ft deep with crystal clear water. We could see Gar fish standing still in the water.

a 5 ft Aligator was romping around in it today!

a clear water shot, nice cold water!

the odd gigantic live oak or pine would be growing amoung the Palms. what was interesting was there were relatively few seedlings and juvinilles growing under all these huge palms, the soil we believe is shallow as we saw some limestone rocks exposed, but soon as we left the cathedral where it was the most dense and other trees were allowed to grow millions of palmetto seedlings were growing.

hope you enjoyed!

I really enjoyed those pictures! Thanks for sharing--I've been to St. Marks several times but never had anybody with me who was enough of a hiker to explore the trails. The gator pic is awesome!
